Christian Eriksen opens up on Man Utd exit with “we are not there” admission
Christian Eriksen is no longer a regular at Manchester United and was linked with a summer exit as his contract continues to wind down after three years at the club.
Christian Eriksen acknowledges he is not currently in negotiations with Manchester United regarding extending his contract.
The Dane is in his third season at Old Trafford, having been one of Erik ten Hag’s early recruits. Eriksen, 31, is far from a definite starter and was linked with a summer move as he dropped down the pecking order.
Despite the talk, Eriksen, who previously starred in the Premier League with Tottenham, has denied that he planned to leave the Manchester club in the summer. Ten Hag has continued to acquire midfielders, leaving Eriksen’s playing time restricted.
His contract is coming to an end, and with Kobbie Mainoo on the rise and Manuel Ugarte joining from PSG, the former Brentford player has yet to speak with the club about his future plans. He explained to Bold at the Danish team hotel in Alicante. “No, we are not there at the moment [talks about staying put].” He went on to clarify: “I have one year left, and then we can have another conversation next year when you stand in a different place.”
Eriksen has been linked with transfers to Ajax, Real Betis, and Anderlecht. However, the Dane says that leaving Old Trafford, where his family lives, was never an option.
“I had no thoughts about moving on,” he told me. “I didn’t hear from the club that they wanted to sell me or that I needed to go. I just thought that my family and I were doing great. If something really amazing came along, or anything that made me say, ‘I want to try this,’ then that was OK, but I didn’t have to go.”
When questioned about the Anderlecht links, he said, “I’m not going to sit and remark on what happened this summer and who I talked to and didn’t talk to. It doesn’t come into play right now. “I look ahead and concentrate on United.”
Eriksen has appeared in five of United’s seven league games thus far, starting three of them, as the club suffers its worst start to a season. The playmaker, who has taken on a more forward role in Manchester, made headlines when he chastised his teammates following a recent draw with Twente, stating their opponents “wanted it more”.
