Due to his lack of management experience, there was some surprise when Eric Ramsay’s hiring as Minnesota United’s manager was confirmed in February. Since 2021, Ramsay has worked in the Manchester United backroom.

where he was employed by Erik ten Hag, Ralf Rangnick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He had previously worked for Chelsea and Shrewsbury Town in the youth system. Ramsay was an assistant coach of the first team when the chance to join MLS presented itself.

Those that played the game were not surprised, despite the fact that some outsiders could have raised their eyebrows. Ramsay was a well respected employee in the United locker room who was responsible for managing the team’s set-piece routines.

Christian Eriksen undoubtedly credited Ramsay’s participation to a skilfully played goal by Marcus Rashford against Nottingham Forest the previous season, and although though Ten Hag inherited him as a staff member, he showed a great deal of faith in the 32-year-old.

Thus, it was generally believed that Ten Hag was thrilled when Ramsay turned down the Blackpool job the previous season.

In the near future, however, he would move into management. He was described as one of the game’s most gifted junior coaches by Rob Page, the former manager of Wales, with whom he had worked in the national team setup.

When Minnesota United contacted Ramsay, who had previously worked with Kieran McKenna at Loughborough University and United and had since seen his former colleague’s success as a manager at Ipswich Town, he was keen to finally make the move for himself.

Ramsay has talked about Solskjaer, Rangnick, and Ten Hag’s outstanding communication abilities and steadfast conviction.

He took over a Loons squad that had not made it to the MLS Cup play-offs the previous season and was in a state of flux following the departure of its previous manager, Adrian Heath. He wanted to put everything he had learnt at United in Minneapolis into practice.

The events that followed have been remarkable. Ramsay and his assistant Dennis Lawrence, a former Coventry coach, have not only led Minnesota back into the playoffs but have also broken records in the process.

The Loons have set new club marks for goals scored, away points, and consecutive clean sheets under Ramsay’s direction. He has also been successful in motivating Kelvin Yeboah, the team’s designated player, to score seven goals in nine games.

Even though they are still in the early stages of their transformation, Minnesota finished the regular season in sixth place in the Western Conference, guaranteeing them a postseason berth.

This season, the first round of the MLS Cup play-offs consisted of a three-match series, with the top two teams moving on to the next round.

The best-of-seven NBA, NHL, and MLB playoff series are analogous to this format. After the conference semifinals, the format changed to single matches.

After the success of people like McKenna and Michael Carrick, who were on the same United leadership squad, don’t be surprised if Ramsay takes home the trophy to solidify his position as the next product of the United coaching conveyor belt.
