You would be forgiven if you thought that Adelio Candido (28), Carlos Fernandes (30), and Ruben Amorim (39), the new head coach of Manchester United, were players on the training pitch. In stark contrast to Erik ten Hag’s style, Amorim has introduced a youthful presence from Sporting, however his backroom staff does not share this tendency.

The United manager and new analyst Eduardo Rosalino are both 39 years old, while Paulo Barreira, the coach of physical performance, is 42 and Emmanuel Ferro, the coach of the first squad, is 45.

However, goalie coach Jorge Vital is the team’s seasoned member. Alongside assistant Craig Mawson, the 63-year-old will collaborate closely with Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Tom Heaton.

In 2012, Amorim met Vital for the first time at Braga. The latter was the Portuguese club’s goalkeeper coach while Amorim was on loan in his playing days.

When the highly regarded tactician was hired as Braga’s head coach seven years later, they ran into one other again at the same club. Later, Vital accompanied him to Sporting.

In a recent interview with The Athletic, a former Sporting employee called Vital the “old man of the team.”

However, they warned supporters not to judge a book by its cover, waxing lyrical about the infectious energy he brings to his role.

“On the pitch, he radiates this infectious vitality, even though he appears to be a grandfather. It’s incredible. His former Sporting coworker, who wished to remain unidentified, clarified, “You want to be just like him.”

That being said, Ten Hag’s poor communication skills—specifically, his use of unfluent English—were one of the most common criticisms directed at him.

After it was discovered that the seasoned coach’s English is quite poor, the same issue can resurface with Vital.

He continued, “I’d be surprised if he could say two sentences in English.” He was formerly a Sporting teammate.

According to reports, Vital will also depend on Mawson to carry out specific training exercises, just like he did with his former assistant Tiago Ferreira, because of a limp that has gotten worse over the course of his 20-year coaching career.

Nonetheless, he has been hailed as the “brains” behind the routines and as a captivating person who frequently shares anecdotes from his playing days off the pitch with passion.

The Premier League journey to Portman Road to play Ipswich Town on Sunday is quickly approaching, marking the first game of the Amorim era.

From that point on, United’s schedule is packed with games till the New Year.
