Incredible Premier League conclusion has shown that Pep Guardiola’s Man City may still need to face Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team

German football has a superior head-to-head record than Spanish football, having won eight of their 22 head-to-head matches to the Spanish team’s seven. But Guardiola has won more accolades.

Guardiola is the winner of 16 trophies with Man City, including five Premier League titles, while Klopp is the winner of every major trophy with the Reds; he has won eight at Anfield after winning the League Cup twice this past month.

With 10 Premier League games left, Liverpool is one point ahead of the defending champions, who are currently in third place. Liverpool and Man City are both vying for the championship this year.

Even though they are still at odds with one another as a result, the pair’s 1-1 draw at Anfield marked the end of an era prior to Klopp’s departure at the end of the season. It was the final time the German team, Liverpool, would play Man City under Guardiola.

Naturally, there was a catch to this idea: they might still get to enjoy one last FA Cup match at Wembley Stadium. That possibility has, however, been eliminated following the Reds’ quarterfinal loss to Manchester United on Sunday.

However, there’s a chance that the Liverpool/Man City rivalry between Klopp and Guardiola will still have one more meeting. The Premier League season could still come to an extraordinary conclusion.

Even though Arsenal is currently leading the league, they are only ahead of the Reds on goal differential. They could easily fall to third behind both of their title rivals by Sunday, March 31, when they play their next Premier League match away at Man City.

Because the margins between Liverpool and City are so close, their 1-1 draw at Anfield has created the possibility that the two will play off for the Premier League title at a neutral site to determine who will win at the end of the season.

If the top two teams in the table have the same number of points at the end of the season, the league position will be determined by goal differential, followed by goals scored, most points earned in head-to-head play, and most away goals in the head-to-head record.

Liverpool currently leads City by one point and has a four-point advantage in goal differential (+39 to +35). They have also scored two goals more and given up two fewer than their opponents. It is still possible that these records will be the same in May.

The head-to-head record is the next important factor. Nevertheless, Liverpool and Man City battled out 1-1 draws at Anfield and the Etihad. As such, a 39th game would be necessary because there would be no way to separate them.

Conversely, if the Reds and Arsenal finished tied on points, there would be no possibility of a Premier League play-off to determine the winner.

With five more goals and two fewer goals allowed than Liverpool, the Gunners have a better goal differential (+46) than Klopp’s team. They also have a winning head-to-head record. They started the month of February with a 3-1 victory at the Emirates after drawing 1-1 at Anfield in December.

Only a 1-0 loss at the Etihad the following month would allow Mikel Arteta’s team to advance to their own Premier League title play-off against Guardiola’s team, having defeated Man City 1-0 at home in October.

Granted, a lot of things still need to come together for this kind of play-off situation to materialize. However, there’s still a chance that Liverpool and City would need to play a 39th game to split the points after their 1-1 draw at Anfield guaranteed a tie in their head-to-head record.

In the ten remaining games of the season, there will undoubtedly be many more twists and turns, but right now, there is hardly much separating Klopp and Guardiola’s teams. A few dropped points here, a decisive victory there, and the two might well find themselves in conflict again.

In the very least, meeting in a play-off match where the stakes have never been higher would be the most fitting conclusion to Klopp and Guardiola’s rivalry on English soil. Liverpool’s FA Cup exit does not rule out one final meeting between the old rivals in what would be the most thrilling Premier League season finale ever.
