BREAKING NEWS: The FA has issued an official statement regarding the Bruno Fernandes red card incident during the defeat to Newcastle.

Manchester United’s 2-0 loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers was exacerbated by the red card shown to captain Bruno Fernandes early in the second half.

Fernandes received his second yellow card within two minutes after the intermission, resulting in his third dismissal this season, following previous expulsions against Tottenham Hotspur and Porto.

Significantly, the initial red card issued against Tottenham was annulled following United’s appeal, therefore it does not impact Fernandes’ disciplinary record.

As this expulsion against Wolves was Fernandes’ inaugural official red card in the Premier League this year, he will incur only a one-game suspension, instead of the two-game punishment that would accompany a subsequent red card.

Fernandes will be sidelined when United confront the formidable Newcastle United on Monday, December 30, with the Magpies aiming to maintain their pursuit of a top-four position.

Fernandes is not the sole United player facing suspension for that match, as head coach Ruben Amorim will also be without Manuel Ugarte, who received his fifth yellow card of the season against Wolves and is required to serve a one-game ban.

Due to Mason Mount’s injury, Amorim has constrained midfield alternatives and is expected to enlist Casemiro to collaborate with Kobbie Mainoo against Newcastle. Christian Eriksen and 20-year-old Toby Collyer are the sole natural midfielders in Amorim’s roster.

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim expressed his frustration with Bruno Fernandes’ red card during Thursday’s 2-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The United captain received his second yellow card barely two minutes into the second half, significantly altering the momentum of the match, as goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-chan resulted in another devastating loss for the Red Devils.

This was Fernandes’ third red card of the season, following expulsions against Tottenham Hotspur and Porto, the former of which was subsequently overturned on appeal. No player from United has received as many red cards in a single season since Nemanja Vidic in 2008/09.

Amorim acknowledged his frustration with Fernandes’ premature exit from the match, however he declined to be excessively critical of the midfielder, viewing it only as an error.

“I will perpetually feel exasperated by a red card, yet it is a possibility,” Amorim stated to the press.

He intended to pursue the ball. He does not wish to halt the game with a yellow card; he desires to attend the ball. The opposing player made initial contact with the ball. That situation is also difficult for him.
