Alejandro Garnacho, a winger for Manchester United, said goodbye to the renowned striker Ruud van Nistelrooy with passion after he left the team on Monday.

Erik ten Hag suggested Van Nistelrooy to Ineos, and he joined United in the summer. It was assumed that the Dutchman was being prepared to take Ten Hag’s place at Old Trafford in the event that the head coach was fired.

The assistant was reportedly uneasy with this notion, though, and it was emphasised that Van Nistelrooy would only be temporarily in charge when Ten Hag was fired at the end of October. Ruben Amorim was swiftly appointed as Ten Hag’s successor by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company, but they were only able to agree that he would begin work on November 11.

This meant that Van Nistelrooy was United’s manager for four games, during which he won three and drew one. Despite his desire to remain at Old Trafford, Amorim’s appointment of his own backroom staff on Monday officially guaranteed his departure.

With a 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City, he would end his career on a triumphant note. Garnacho paid homage to Van Nistelrooy on social media on Monday night after scoring the game-winning goal.

“It was a short time but it was special,” Garnacho replied to Van Nistelrooy, sharing a photo of themselves on the touchline. You taught me a lot, and I will keep it to myself for the remainder of my professional life.

“However, your character is what I will remember most. Legend, we’ll cross paths again.

Given the knowledge he has gained, Van Nistelrooy’s next professional step is sure to be intriguing. Prior to choosing to return to Old Trafford as an assistant, he was being tipped for the open Burnley position. He was previously the head coach of PSV Eindhoven.
