Ben Doak’s assist in Scotland’s pivotal Nations League victory over Poland earned him accolades from Scotland manager Steve Clarke.

John McGinn and Andy Robertson, two Premier League players, gave Clarke’s team the victory they needed in Warsaw to prevent immediate relegation to League B.

Scotland will now have the opportunity to guarantee its place in League A with a two-leg play-off in March, after Liverpool left-back Robertson scored a thrilling winning goal in stoppage time to condemn Poland to relegation.

John Souttar provided the assist for Robertson’s equaliser, but Doak put Scotland’s first goal on a platter for McGinn. Following the game, Clarke talked about the young player’s performance.

Clarke remarked, “When you look towards the end of the game, we made five changes,” of the team’s victory. “I believe the squad has a solid depth. Three or four more players are still absent, and they might likely contribute to that. I’m hoping they can get back into shape and make my work more challenging come next year.

“Over my five and a half years, I’ve experienced many positive moments, and this is simply one more step in the process. To gain a result, we understood we would need to perform at our highest level. Here, too, we may state that we know how to leave home and achieve success in a challenging setting.

“It’s good that Ben (Doak) got another assist. Although I should have perhaps taken him off a little sooner, I believe he became fatigued quite early in the second half. Nevertheless, he is a threat since he is direct and attacks defenders.

Doak is undoubtedly benefiting from his decision to leave Liverpool on loan over the summer, as he has participated in all six of Scotland’s Nations League games, starting in the last four.

In ten games for Middlesbrough, the Scot has scored one goal and provided three assists. His excellent dribbling and direct wing play have forced many Championship full-backs to struggle.

Although Boro were reportedly unconcerned about the remark from Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot’s recent quip about remembering Doak from January was an indication that Slot had been keeping an eye on Doak’s performance on Teesside.
