In Casemiro’s second season at Old Trafford, Manchester United has struggled with inconsistent play, and the team faces a difficult task to qualify for the Champions League once again.

Casemiro claims that he has had trouble sleeping during his challenging second season as a Manchester United player, with the team’s chances of qualifying for Europe being threatened by his patchy play.

In Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window in charge, Casemiro, a former midfielder for Real Madrid, made a sizable financial transfer and made an instant impression. With a victory over Newcastle in the 2023 Carabao Cup final, the Brazilian gave United their first trophy after a six-year wait. Third place earned them a spot in the Champions League.

However, this term has been more difficult than last. Ten Hag’s team finished bottom of their group and were knocked out of Europe before Christmas. With seven league games left, they are 11 points outside of qualifying for the Champions League. Casemiro was sent off in a heartbreaking loss to Galatasaray at home.

It has been an inconsistent week, with United having only won five of their league games so far this season. Multiple Champions League winner Casemiro has opened up about his difficulties off the field, indicating that his form has taken a toll.

“It’s challenging,” Casemiro said to ESPN Brazil. The thing that irritates me the most about not competing for titles is this. twenty points fewer than the top spot.

Sometimes I’m so tired that I can’t even try to think of something different to do. It is actuality. It is useless to consider titles or Champions League spots; instead, we should focus on today’s games.”

He insisted that the team succeeds and fails together despite his personal struggles. “Here, when you win, everyone wins, when you lose, everyone loses,” he stated. “It’s not Casemiro who is in sixth, are all the players who are in sixth.”

When United welcomed Liverpool to Old Trafford on Sunday, they had the opportunity to close the gap with teams sitting higher in the table. A long-range Bruno Fernandes goal and a Kobbie Mainoo curler gave them the lead, but Mohamed Salah equalized from the penalty spot after they withstood a one-sided first half to trail only 1-0 at the half.

Ten Hag expressed disappointment with his team’s performance, saying, “On one side, we have to blame ourselves for making stupid mistakes. We have to drop seven points in one week after being in winning positions.” Not every time is it the same player, but there are also some bad choices. We must still get better, and the sooner the better.

Conversely, I feel a great sense of pride. You can see how much we’ve improved, and this team has incredible potential. I’m proud of them. We were losing fights in critical areas, particularly against inexperienced players, whom we did not think could win [duels]. They responded well to our encouragement to perform better in the second half.

Following United’s draw, Ten Hag’s team now leads by 11 points after Tottenham, one of United’s top four rivals, defeated Nottingham Forest. Despite having played more games than Spurs, Aston Villa and Spurs are tied on points.

United is now in sixth place, which is good enough for a play-off spot in the Conference League, closely followed by West Ham and Newcastle. But if they win the FA Cup, they still have a chance to play in the Europa League; Coventry City, a Championship team, will be waiting for them in the semi-finals.
