Breaking News: David de Gea expects a decision on his future “next week”

David de Gea, the 33-year-old goalie for Manchester United, is anticipated to get “news about his future next week” as he considers several offers from around the world.

Since leaving Old Trafford on a free transfer in July of last year, De Gea has not played a single minute of professional football.

The Spaniard held the top spot at United for twelve years, but Erik ten Hag’s demands on goalkeepers did not align with his style of play. De Gea’s ability to stop shots has been extraordinary at times when he has played in England, but he is not very good when the ball is at his feet.

The Dutch manager had high hopes for De Gea during his first season in English football, but a string of costly errors towards the end of the campaign, notably the 2023 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester City, made Ten Hag realise he needed to make a change.

Ten Hag had previously worked with Andre Onana at Ajax, and he was signed by Inter Milan in a deal of £47 million, while De Gea’s contract offer was withdrawn and replaced with a lower salary.

De Gea declined this contract since it effectively dropped him to number two at a team where he had spent more than ten years as the unquestioned number one. After De Gea was let go and Onana was recruited, United also paid £4.3 million to Fenerbahce for Altay Bayindir, who would serve as their backup custodian.

On the free agency market, De Gea did not have an easy time finding a new club that fit his needs. The Spaniard is still looking for a new place to live, twelve months after leaving United.

De Gea used a mysterious hourglass emoji on his X page (previously known as Twitter) on Saturday. There’s only so much conjecture that can come from a post like this, but according to The Athletic, the goalie is considering offers that are currently on the table.

According to sources close to De Gea, he has received “several offers” and “expects to have news about his future next week,” as detailed in The Athletic’s transfer column.

One bid comes from a Saudi Pro League squad, which could support a claim from The Peoples Person regarding Cristiano Ronaldo’s wish to rejoin his Al-Nassr colleague. The US and Italian clubs are the ones making the other offers.

An “English club has also expressed an interest,” according to The Athletic, but De Gea turned this down because of his “12-year association with United” and his desire to stay out of the Premier League.

In any case, it seems De Gea’s protracted search for a new residence away from Old Trafford will come to an end the next week. It is unclear where it will occur—in the Midwest, the Mediterranean, or the Middle East.
