“Emotional” and rendered speechless, former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can led Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final.

Dortmund defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the second leg of the semi-final on Tuesday and 2-0 overall to secure their spot in the championship game thanks to a goal from Mats Hummels in the second half. Next month, Edin Terzic’s team will play Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the main event at Wembley.

Dortmund hasn’t advanced this far in the competition since they were defeated by Bayern Munich in London in 2013. They may play the same opponent at the same location on June 1. Dortmund has performed incredibly well to get to the final after advancing through the “Group of Death.”

Can played the entire match at Parc des Princes and led Dortmund to a victory over PSG. He will now get ready for his first Champions League final since leaving Liverpool, and his third overall. As a substitute in the 2018 Champions League final loss to Real Madrid, he played his final game for the Reds.

Can found it difficult to control his emotions following Dortmund’s victory over PSG and proceeded to open up about his time at Liverpool and his struggles with a variety of injuries. Can played for Anfield for four years, making 166 appearances and scoring 14 goals.

“It’s very different, I would say, because when I was with Bayern in the final I didn’t play, I was a young guy,” Can stated to CBS Sports. “I didn’t play, but I was on the squad. My injury with Liverpool kept me out of the quarterfinal and semifinal matches for a long time.

“I’m playing every game right now, and each one has a unique feel and way of playing. I am incredibly proud to be this team’s captain. I become emotional if I talk too much.”

Can left the Reds to join Juventus, and he ended up staying in Italy for less than two years, playing in just 45 games before going on loan to Dortmund for the second half of the 2019–20 season. Can joined the team permanently in the summer after making an impression while on loan, and he has been there ever since.

Regarding Dortmund’s victory over PSG, head coach Terzic stated: “There was belief.” We talked about how close the trip to London is and the matchup against Eindhoven (Dortmund’s last-16 match). We’re eagerly anticipating it, but it will take some time for us to realize that.”

“We will face a very strong opponent,” Hummels continued. Everybody believes in it. We have been confident that we can make it through the Champions League since, at the very least, the second group stage match.”
