Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports analyst, believes that Ruben Amorim’s first Premier League game as Manchester United’s manager may be a difficult day at work. After his high-profile hiring at the beginning of the month, the 39-year-old will play Ipswich on Sunday with his new squad at Portman Road.

Amorim had to serve a 30-day notice at Sporting CP after agreeing to his contract, which added time to the build-up to his arrival at Old Trafford because he replaced Erik ten Hag.

When he eventually had the opportunity to train for the first time on Monday, he seemed to immediately adopt the famous 3-4-3 system that many supporters are hoping he will employ this weekend.

Ipswich is four spots and seven points behind United in the Premier League standings, sitting in 17th place. However, Carragher believes that Amorim’s first task will be extremely challenging due to the Kieran McKenna factor.

He said in the Telegraph, “It might seem like a gentle introduction to English football for Amorim to face the team fourth from bottom.” It will be far more difficult than most people anticipate, in my opinion.

“United plays more than simply Ipswich at Portman Road. They take on a manager who may be more familiar with United’s team’s advantages and disadvantages than the new coach.

After five years at United, McKenna, 38, left for Ipswich in December 2021. Before being elevated to the senior squad, the Englishman coached the team’s Under-18 team. He was Jose Mourinho’s assistant manager and had previously worked as a coach for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.

Additionally, it was stated that INEOS considered him to take Ten Hag’s job last summer, but ultimately decided to offer the Dutchman a new contract. Additionally, Carragher thinks his understanding of the United setup might be very helpful, particularly if they set up as anticipated.

“Ipswich will try to spoil Amorim’s opening day in a new way when the lineups are revealed and McKenna sees which players are taking on unfamiliar positions,” he added. “McKenna is perhaps the most qualified person in the league to determine right away whether certain United players will fit in or not.

The 3-4-3 that was so effective at Sporting Lisbon was introduced by Amorim, thus United’s players will have to get used to a completely different strategy. In the long run, we can anticipate a notable improvement in performance and outcomes. It is normal to anticipate teething issues in the short term.

However, in his initial interview, the former Liverpool player hailed Amorim’s performance and stated that he had “high expectations” for his reign. He claimed to have spoken with the attitude of a “elite coach” and that, in contrast to Ten Hag, he had already laid out a clear objective and philosophy.
