“Where I am supposed to be” is what Ruben Amorim says in a preview of his first interview as head coach of Manchester United.

After the famous striker oversaw a brief four-game stint in charge, the 39-year-old took over as temporary manager from Ruud van Nistelrooy and went into Manchester on Monday to start his new position.

Amorim will start a new chapter at Old Trafford as the Red Devils’ first-ever head coach, a position United sought to pursue following a thorough reorganisation of the club’s leadership. Amorim was appointed to succeed Erik ten Hag following his dismissal in October.

Amorim’s outstanding record with Portuguese powerhouse Sporting CP made him the obvious choice to succeed Ten Hag, and many fans are now eager to find out what their new head coach has in store for them.

For now, United supporters might find solace in a little excerpt from Amorim’s initial interview, which indicates that he is composed and confident as he begins work.

Amorim remarked, “You see it on TV and you know it’s large and impressive.” “You can sense it and, I believe, the history when you are here.

It’s incredible, and I’m incredibly proud to be the coach of Manchester United. Being here is truly an honour.

He continued, “That’s really funny because I feel very relaxed,” after being informed of Old Trafford’s illustrious past. “Perhaps since it’s not game day. I’m a different person when we play, but I don’t feel the pressure.

“You know, I’m feeling very calm and excited. I believe I am in the right place.

Amorim takes over as United, who have only won four of their 11 games thus far, are in a pitiful 13th place in the Premier League standings. Among those wins was a resounding 3-0 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford in Van Nistelrooy’s last game as manager.

Amorim still has work to do in the Europa League. With three draws against FC Twente, Fenerbahce, and Porto, United has only won one of their first four league phase games. They are currently ranked 15th out of 36 teams, and if they want to go straight to the knockout stages, they must place in the top eight.

A cursory look at Amorim’s performance with Sporting CP in 2024–2025 should give you a lot of confidence that he can turn things around. In a recent Champions League match, the 20-time Primeira Liga champions easily defeated Manchester City 4-1. They have won all 11 of their league games, scoring 39 goals and giving up just five.
