Erik ten Hag and Manchester United have a decision to make on the player’s future

According to Christian Eriksen, there are no plans to continue at Manchester United past the 2024–2025 campaign.

While playing for Denmark on international duty, the seasoned 32-year-old Danish midfielder alluded to a new journey away from Old Trafford. He is scheduled to become a free agent next summer. Eriksen was a part of Erik ten Hag’s early success when he took over at United back in 2022. After his thrilling period at Brentford following a heart crisis, Erik ten Hag signed the midfield player on a free transfer.

During his three-year career, the former Spurs player has appeared in 80 games for United, recording 16 assists and six goals. During Ten Hag’s first season at Old Trafford, he played a crucial role as the Red Devils won the Carabao Cup and finished in third place in the league.

However, he saw his influence at the club significantly decline the previous season as United struggled to an embarrassing eighth-place finish, which fueled rumors about a possible departure, with Real Betis, Ajax, and Anderlecht apparently keeping an ear to the ground, according to the Express. Eriksen insisted that leaving United never occurred to him this summer, despite the swirling rumors, and the team gave no indications that they wanted him gone either.

From Denmark’s squad quarters in Alicante, Eriksen told Bold, “I had no thoughts about moving on, and I didn’t hear from the club that they wanted to sell me or that I had to leave.” All I could really feel was that my family and I were doing very good.

“If something really exciting came along, or something where I really felt: ‘I want to try this,’ then fair enough, but it wasn’t something that I had to leave.”

When Eriksen is once again a free agent in the summer of 2020, there are rumors that he is headed out. The seasoned midfielder has acknowledged that he is not in talks with United to prolong his contract and believes that at the end of the season, he will be in a different position.

Eriksen revealed all. “No, we are not there at the moment [talks about staying put],” he said. He continued: “I have one year left, and then we can have another conversation next year when you stand in a different place.”

Six of the eight games the squad has played this season across all competitions have featured the United star. But other from a brace of goals and an assist against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup, he hasn’t scored or assisted in any league game as United has collapsed to an astonishing 14th place following their worst-ever Premier League season opening.

More often than Casemiro and the new £50 million player for the team, Manuel Ugarte, Ten Hag has played him with Kobbie Mainoo. The Dutch manager must now choose whether to offer the star a new contract or spend money on a replacement in the transfer market since he may leave the team in the summer.
