Chelsea defeated Newcastle 3-2 with Mykhaylo Mudryk coming off the bench to score, but Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino still wants to see more from the forward.

Despite his game-winning cameo against Newcastle, Mykhaylo Mudryk has received a warning from Mauricio Pochettino that he is not yet ready to start in the Premier League for 2024.

On Monday, Chelsea defeated Newcastle 3-2; Nicolas Jackson, Cole Palmer, and Mudryk all scored goals for the Blues. Mudryk’s goal was an especially good one; the winger dribbled the ball past Martin Dubravka, the goalkeeper, and Fabian Schar before finishing it in the net.

But when Mudryk was asked whether his performance could lead to his first league start since December, Pochettino pushed the 23-year-old to keep honing his craft.

“It was a very good goal and that is what we expect from a player from the bench – impact,” said Pochettino. “Next, he has to contend with rival players for his spot. He will then be deserving of (start). It’s a question better suited for him than for me.

After a dismal start to his Chelsea career, Mudryk’s performance against Newcastle was compared to “the start of something” by Liverpool legend Jamie Carrgher. Carragher said to Sky Sports, “I was just happy that Mudryk scored.”

It hasn’t been simple for him. He wouldn’t have preferred how things haven’t worked out for him. This from Newcastle is startling. There’s a player there that I saw a few years ago in the Champions League. I hope this is just the beginning for him.”

In addition, Gary Neville commended Mudryk for his goal-scoring technique. “Since taking over for Raheem Sterling, he has been energetic. Neville stated during his commentary, “He was brave, optimistic, and he took it off Conor Gallagher.

“They first released Jackson down that left-hand side; when they returned to Newcastle, he simply played it back to Gallagher, who was unaware that Mudryk was present and was dispossessed by his own player.

“However, Mudryk has the poise to take it past the goalie and can easily slip it between Schar’s legs. He’s not always at his best in the end, but this was excellent.

“It looks like he has taken this game away from Newcastle and a much-needed three points it would be for Chelsea.” Chelsea’s return to action comes this weekend when they play Leicester in the FA Cup quarterfinals.
