Expert in transfer news Fabrizio Romano has praised Manchester United for signing Leny Yoro from Lille this summer, calling it a “really surprising” decision.

According to Romano, who spoke exclusively to CaughtOffside for the most recent episode of The Debrief Podcast, the gifted young Frenchman really came to terms with Real Madrid after shining in Ligue 1 and establishing himself as one of the best young players in Europe.

Romano congratulated Man Utd and complimented them for this unexpected agreement, but he also acknowledged that, up until a few days before the Red Devils finalised the deal after making a strong bid for the 18-year-old, he fully anticipated Yoro to end up at Real Madrid.

Yoro has since moved on to play preseason for United, and fans will undoubtedly be thrilled about his enormous potential as the team begins to truly step up its recruitment with the inclusion of Joshua Zirkzee and Yoro, two outstanding long-term players.

Fabrizio Romano was startled by Yoro’s transfer.

Discussing how the Yoro deal ended up going, Romano said: “Honestly, yes (it was surprising). “Not in the last days, because from that Tuesday when Manchester United were able to arrange the deal with Lille, I understood that they were truly entering strong in the race and with a decent chance to make it happen. Maybe a 30-35%, but still a good chance.

“But before that, absolutely yes. If you asked me in June, in May or in April, the answer was absolutely Real Madrid. And I suppose if you asked Leny Yoro in that period of the year, it was Real Madrid, undoubtedly. He wanted to move to Real Madrid, he agreed everything properly with Real Madrid, his idea at Real Madrid was ready.

“So it was really surprising. And congrats to Man United because to enter the race in that fashion and to be able to conclude the deal in almost ten days has been really, really great, surprising in a positive sense.
