According to sources, Bologna is still seeking additional funding in order to sell Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal this summer, but not from the Gunners.

The Serie A defender helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League by placing fifth in Serie A, and he made 33 appearances across all competitions during his stellar first season.

Last summer, Calafiori relocated to Bologna from Basel, Switzerland, with a 50% sell-on provision added to his contract.

Twelve days ago, it was rumoured that Calafiori’s transfer to Arsenal will happen “within 24-48 hours,” but Bologna has not yet approved the transfer for the Gunners to complete.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has attempted to allay supporters’ concerns that the Italy international, who made an impression at Euro 2024, is “obsessed” with the chance to play for the Premier League team.

“Arsenal have the match point to sign Riccardo Calafiori, an agreement with the player, and I can guarantee that the player is obsessed with the opportunity to go to Arsenal,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.

“He truly adores the concept, the project, and the chance to train with a world-class coach like Mikel Arteta.”

Bologna requested for Jakub Kiwior during negotiations with Arsenal for Riccardo Calafiori, but the Polish defender isn’t now interested in moving, according to Romano, who continued on X. Calafiori does not give up on Arsenal. Kiwior, as reported in June, is allowed to go on loan from Arsenal with a buyback requirement.

Furthermore, it has been reported by the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) that Calafiori is getting ready to resume preseason play later this month by being “in the fields of his agency.”

Although Bologna and Arsenal are said to have struck a “viable agreement” for his move, Basel’s 50% sell-on clause is reportedly the reason for the transfer’s delay.

Bologna is ‘trying to force’ Basel to reduce the amount of the sell-on clause, according to Sport Witness, as the Serie A team tries to get a larger share of the revenue from Arsenal.

Bologna has been “quite cocky” throughout the process, but Basel may have to give in if the Italians want more money from the Gunners because they are not showing themselves to be “easy to manipulate.”

The centre defender has “already expressed” his desire to move to the Emirates Stadium, but Bologna “will only let him leave if their financial wishes are satisfied.”
