Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that in advance of a potential transfer deal, Arsenal has gotten in touch with Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino.

The Gunners are about to sign Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori. After completing his physical, the Italian player might soon travel to the United States with his new teammates for the preseason. According to Romano, Merino is being considered by the club, which is set to make an official move for a new midfield player in the next few days.

Romano continued, saying that although there have been negotiations between the player and the club, Arsenal has not yet made an official proposal for Mikel Merino since their priority has been to finalise the deal for Calafiori. With Merino on the list, official negotiations for a new midfield player will begin in the coming days. Player-side approaches have already taken place.

This summer, Arsenal’s transfer procedures have been sluggish. Although they have not yet confirmed an outfield addition, Calafiori’s move ought to be made public by the end of the weekend. A new midfielder may be their next area of emphasis, as Romano has stated that the team has spoken with the player’s representative regarding Merino.

When it comes to winning duels, the former Newcastle United player is among the top midfielders in Europe’s top five divisions. In the most recent campaign, he won an incredible 326 duels, with Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United coming in second. The Spaniard has also shown great skill in his tackles, recoveries, and effective line-clearing.

The midfield player has not been as effective with his distribution as he could be, but he could do much better on a team that values possession like Arsenal. Merino would be a great addition for the Gunners, especially considering his modest asking price of £21 million. Merino scored 8 goals and supplied 5 assists for Sociedad last season. Next term, manager Mikel Arteta may deploy the “world-class” player in a rotational role based on the needs of the team.

Barcelona is also a fan of the highly skilled midfield player, but Arsenal now have the upper hand because the La Liga powerhouses would have to sell Frenkie de Jong to acquire him. The Spanish team feels that they cannot afford to sign Merino without de Jong leaving, thus they are prioritising the signings of Nico Williams and Dani Olmo.
