NOW WE DO: Manchester United announces the signing of a five-year contract with the £60 million Dutch superstar. The deal was negotiated and finalised yesterday.

Brian Brobbey, a 22-year-old striker who has been targeted by Manchester United for a long time, is available this summer for just €25–30 million, since Ajax is willing to trade him.

Erik ten Hag is a big fan of the forward, which is why the Red Devils have been continuously associated with the Dutchman for the last two years.

Brobbey disclosed that during Ten Hag’s first summer in charge at Old Trafford, the former Ajax manager personally reached out to him via WhatsApp in an attempt to persuade the 22-year-old to follow in his footsteps and move to Manchester.

After growing up in the Dutch capital, Brobbey joined Ajax when he was ten years old, but he turned off Ten Hag’s advances since he was only interested in succeeding when he returned to Amsterdam in 2021.

Then, in January of this year, the Red Devils and the striker resumed their relationship, with United in dire need of upfront reinforcements.

Rasmus Hojlund was the sole healthy striker at Old Trafford due to a long-term injury to Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford’s off-field issues. This was an excessive responsibility for the 20-year-old Dane, who was playing in his debut season of English football.

Ten Hag openly expressed the need for a new number nine to support his underperforming forward line, but the Premier League’s Profits and Sustainability Rules (PSR) put too much pressure on the club’s finances to allow a transfer.

United signed no striker and had a negative goal differential at the end of the season, finishing in eighth place.

After taking complete command of the Old Trafford football business in February, INEOS made Joshua Zirzkee their first priority in an effort to improve this section of the pitch.

In a move valued at more than £35 million, the 23-year-old Dutch international was signed earlier this month from Bologna to assist Hojlund. Zirkzee can play up front, as a number 10, or on the wing, and his versatility will allow him to support the Danish striker rather than take his place.

But, rumours had indicated that INEOS was still looking for a different striker because the club’s new owners were still bitter with United only managing to score 57 goals in the league.

Ivan Toney of Brentford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton are mentioned as potential additions, but both will probably prove too expensive for United’s summer spending plan. Therefore, Old Trafford authorities may find the idea of a long-term goal in need, such as Brobbey, available at a cost of about £23 million, alluring.
