Former Liverpool player Peter Cormack died at the age of 78.

Cormack played with the Reds from 1972 to 1976, winning two first-division titles, the Uefa Cup, and the FA Cup, as well as two Charity Shields during that time.

Signed by famous manager Bill Shanky, he was an important member of the Liverpool club that dominated English football in the 1970s.

The club issued a statement saying, “Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former midfielder Peter Cormack, aged 78.”

“The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool FC are with Peter’s family and friends during this very sad and difficult time.”

After 182 appearances for Hibernian, Cormack moved south to Nottingham Forest in 1970.

Two years later, he joined Liverpool, where Shankly viewed him as the ‘last piece of the jigsaw’ in his quest to establish a team that would dominate English football.

He scored ten goals in his debut season at Anfield, helping the team win the debut Division and the Uefa Cup, defeating Borussia Monchengladbach in the final. It was the first of many pieces of European silverware to come to Merseyside in the following years.

He won the FA Cup in his second season with the club, starting in midfield as Liverpool defeated Newcastle United at Wembley.

That injury cut short his Liverpool career, and he left the club in November 1976 after 178 games and 26 goals.

Cormack joined Bristol City that year before rejoining Hibernian. Following his death, the Scottish club tweeted: “Everyone at Hibernian FC is deeply saddened by the passing of former Hibee Peter Cormack at the age of 78.” Rest in peace, Peter.

Cormack came into management after retiring from football, having previously led Partick Thistle, Cyrpiot club Anorthosis FC, Cowdenbeath, and Greenock Morton, as well as the Botswana national team.
