FENERBAHCE 1-1 MAN UTD: Erik ten Hag’s team established an early advantage in Istanbul; however, their Europa League record remains unblemished due to a subpar second-half performance.

Manchester United amassed a hat-trick of draws in the Europa League following their loss of a critical lead in Istanbul.

The Red Devils had not won either of their initial games in Europe prior to their travel to Fenerbahce, which was guided by Jose Mourinho. Fenerbahce had assured Erik ten Hag and his teammates that they would receive the “welcome from hell” in an effort to compound the Dutchman’s misery.

After a resounding victory over Brentford at the weekend, United arrived in high spirits. However, despite the fact that they may have made progress domestically, they are still under pressure to improve their performance in Europe.

Ten Hag’s announcement that right-back Noussair Mazraoui would be playing as a No.10 per match caused eyebrows to raise. However, the Moroccan forward contributed to United’s elegant opening goal, which was expertly scored by Christian Eriksen, who is a No.10 by profession.

The second half began slowly, which allowed Youssef En-Nesyri to restore parity just four minutes after the break. This resulted in United’s wait for a three-point tally in Europe being extended until at least the following month.

Mourinho’s warning is taken into account by Ten Hag.

A voyage to Fenerbahce to face Mourinho was a fixture that Ten Hag could have done without, given the scrutiny that has been on him in recent weeks.

It was arguably a daunting prospect to overcome Mourinho, who has flourished in Europe throughout his tenure, in the cauldron of Istanbul.

It is worth noting that Mourinho himself had been burnt in the past. He expressed his disappointment in 2016, following his United team’s defeat by Fenerbahce, stating, “I have a significant amount of experience playing against Turkish teams.” I impart all of my expertise to the players, and my experience is that playing against them at home is always effortless, resulting in a score of 2-0 or 4-0.

“When you arrive in Turkey, the narrative is entirely different.” I advised them to anticipate that, and to refrain from concentrating on a straightforward game. They should be prepared for a game that was entirely different. However, we began the game by falling asleep.

United appeared to have heeded that warning when they persevered through the initial tempest and broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with Eriksen. However, they quickly relinquished the lead just four minutes into the second half as a result of some passive defense.

Unfortunately for United, this ultimately proved to be the deciding factor in their failure to break their European jinx and earn a victory over their former manager, who was shown a red card for fouling off on the touchline in the second half. Consequently, they were compelled to accept a point.

And although a point at Fenerbahce is commendable, United’s failure to secure victories against FC Twente and FC Porto in their most recent matches does not bode well for their current manager. Neither does the fact that they have not won a European match in the past year.
