Manchester City 0-2 Liverpool: Player Ratings and Match Highlights

Published

on

Liverpool secured a massive three points away to Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, increasing their Premier League lead to 11 points.

Despite the home side’s strong first ten minutes, Liverpool seized the lead in the 14th minute through Mohamed Salah. The goal came from a well-executed corner routine that found the Egyptian in the area, and his deflected shot beat Ederson. It was a good goal, but City will be frustrated because they conceded the corner due to shoddy defensive play.

On the half-hour mark, the hosts had the ball in the net due to a very neat finish from Omar Marmoush, but the linesman raised his flag for offside, and the action resumed at 0-1.

Just seven minutes after City thought they had levelled the score, Dominik Szoboszlai put the Premier League leaders ahead 2-0. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered a lofted pass down the right wing to Salah, who cut it back to the Hungarian, who finished smartly and low into the net, leaving Ederson stuck.

Szoboszlai’s goal was the last action of the first half, and the visitors led 2-0 at the break.

Liverpool thought they had entered dreamland in the 56th minute when they made a wonderful move and Curtis Jones tapped in, but the goal was called out for offside.

There was little goalmouth action in the second half despite the home side controlling possession and having eight shots on goal, and Liverpool won 2-0, putting them 11 points ahead of second-place Arsenal.

Manchester City Players’ Ratings

GK: Ederson (6/10)
Couldn’t do much for Liverpool’s goals, as the first was a large deflection and the second was a fine finish.

RB: Rico Lewis – 6/10.
Energetic both with and without the ball, although there were no standout moments during the encounter.

CB: Abdukodir Khusanov (6.5/10)
The youngster was good at playing out from the back, but he also had some wobbly moments when he appeared apprehensive and was on the verge of making a mistake.

CB: Nathan Ake (6.5/10)
Ake didn’t have much to do defensively because the majority of Liverpool’s attacks were played wide, but he was decent on the ball, just like his defensive partner.

LB: Josko Gvardiol (6.5/10)
Struggled to deal with Salah’s attacking threat, although at times he defended energetically and kept his team out of trouble.

DM: Nico Gonzalez – 6.5/10
A quiet presence in middle. The Spaniard was in charge of bringing the ball out of the back, which he did admirably, but he didn’t provide anything in the attacking third.

AM: Kevin De Bruyne (5/10)
He struggled to exert as much creative influence on the contest as he had in prior years. For the bulk of the game, De Bruyne appeared to be slowing down.

AM: Omar Marmoush (7/10)
Tried to get things done, but his teammates were not on the same page. He posed a threat to Liverpool’s defence with his quickness and made some excellent crosses.

RW: Savinho – 7.5/10
He used his pace and skill to great effect while attacking down the right wing, and he was City’s main attacking threat alongside Doku.

ST: Phil Foden, 6/10
Despite playing up front, Foden received little touches in forward areas and instead attempted to drop deep, which did not work well.

LW: Jeremy Doku, 8/10.
He dominated Alexander-Arnold almost every time he faced him, but occasionally let himself down with his final delivery into the box.

SUB: James McAtee (6/10)
Despite playing for more than 25 minutes, he barely touched the ball.

SUB: Ilkay Gundogan (N/A)
I didn’t do anything after coming on.

SUB: Ruben Dias, N/A
I didn’t do anything after coming on.

SUB: Mateo Kovacic – N/A.

Liverpool Players’ Ratings

Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker – 8/10.
He had excellent command of his area and made several good saves.

RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold (5.5/10)
Every time Doku ran at him, he struggled to protect and did not have his typical attacking performance.

CB: Ibrahima Konate (7.5/10)
He put his body on the line and executed numerous outstanding blocks and clearances.

CB: Virgil van Dijk (7.5/10)
Defended well against City’s set pieces and crosses, and van Dijk, like Konate, made numerous outstanding blocks and clearances.

LB: Andrew Robertson (7/10)
Didn’t see much of the ball, but defended well against Savinho when needed.

CM: Ryan Gravenberch (7/10)
Gravenberch’s intensity in midfield was impressive, but he didn’t see much of the ball because Liverpool didn’t have nearly as much possession as they often do.

CM: Alexis MacAllister, 7/10.
He pressed well and worked extremely hard, which was necessary given City’s dominance of the ball.

CM: Curtis Jones (6.5/10)
He had to play in a variety of positions throughout the game, which was challenging for him.

RW: Mohamed Salah (9/10)
Another outstanding performance by the Egyptian. Salah looked extremely threatening every time he took up the ball and scored two more goals, bringing his total to 40 in the Premier League this season.

ST: Dominik Szoboszlai (8/10)
He took his goal quite well and worked tirelessly without the ball throughout the game.

LW: Luis Diaz, 7.5/10.
Worked tirelessly and pressed hard, but he was also a threat with the ball, rushing at the City defence and causing issues.

SUB: Konstantinos Tsimikas (N/A)
I didn’t do anything after coming on.

SUB: Wataru Endo (N/A)

Man of the Match.
Mohamed Salah

Another outstanding effort by the finest player in the Premier League this season. The Egyptian superstar looked extremely threatening whenever he got the ball at his feet, whether in wide or centre areas. Salah increased his goal and assist count to 40 tonight, with 11 games remaining in the Premier League, which is just incredible and demonstrates his talent.

Salah was not just effective in the last third, but he also contributed defensively and offensively as Manchester City dominated possession throughout the game.
