Manchester United ‘plot’ shock £40m transfer for Premier League star to replace Casemiro

Manchester United is actively considering acquiring midfield reinforcements during the upcoming summer transfer window, and there are indications indicating their interest in pursuing a transfer for Joao Gomes, a talented player from Wolves.

Erik ten Hag is eager to acquire a new defensive midfielder due to concerns about the durability of the current preferred choice, Casemiro. Last month, the Brazilian, who is now 32 years old, has faced difficulties throughout the season owing to recurring injuries. Most recently, he was unable to participate in Sunday’s 3-2 FA Cup victory against Liverpool because of a persistent hamstring problem.

Casemiro has been compelled to withdraw from his international obligations with Brazil. The Mirror has stated that a possible substitute for him at Old Trafford is being considered. Gomes, who is 23 years old, has the potential to earn his first international appearance when Brazil competes against England at Wembley on Saturday. It has been said that Manchester United has held a longstanding admiration for him.

Scouts have reportedly attended many Wolves games this season, including a recent 2-1 victory for Gary O’Neil’s team against Fulham. Similar to the Brazilian national team, it appears that Gomes is being considered as the future replacement for Casemiro, although acquiring him will require a significant financial investment.

Wolves acquired Gomes from Flamengo in January 2023 and secured him with a five-and-a-half-year contract that has the potential to be extended for an additional 12 months. They purchased their man for £12 million slightly over a year ago, but they now estimate his value to be over £40 million. In addition, there is the additional risk of competition from fellow teams in the Premier League, including Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.
