Mo Salah Praised For Reaction to Liverpool Making 6th Substitution vs Southampton

According to Keith Hackett, Mohamed Salah was correct to raise concerns about a Liverpool change during their comeback 3-1 victory over Southampton on Saturday afternoon. The Egyptian international was praised by the former PGMOL chief and former FIFA official when he saw that his team was getting ready to make their sixth replacement of the game as Jarell Quansah was stripped and ready in the closing minutes.

The maximum number of substitute players that can be utilised in normal situations is five. Given that Diogo Jota, Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott, and Alexis Mac Allister had already come off the bench, this raised fears among Reds fans and the Premier League’s top scorer that Liverpool might lose points for breaking the rules.

However, Jan Bednarek’s concussion from a collision with Southampton teammate Ryan Manning in the first half resulted in the addition of an extra substitution for Arne Slot’s team. Even though he didn’t have to step in, Salah is now receiving recognition for acting as both a law enforcement officer and the primary supplier of goals for his team.

Mohamed Salah Praised For Questioning Liverpool’s Sixth Sub

A former PGMOL Chief has explained that the mistake could have easily happened

Referee Lewis Smith had to explain to Salah why the sixth substitution was permitted in order to calm him down (see the post below). Given how easily these errors may occur, Hackett has subsequently commended that early concern.

The former referee responded, “It could easily happen and that is why the fourth official takes an active role to ensure that it does not,” when questioned by Football Insider if it is possible that an additional substitution could be made by accident.

Hackett went on: “Equal numbers of substitution cards are given to both teams before to kickoff. The fourth official receives the completed form when a substitution is made, and he or she compares the player’s name and number with a team sheet that is given to the match referee one hour prior to kickoff.

Additionally, concussion subs are documented. The Premier League office receives these filled-out forms. It’s commendable that Salah recognised a potential issue and got the right guidance.

The second leg of Liverpool’s Champions League round of 16 match against Paris Saint-Germain is scheduled for Tuesday night. In contrast, Southampton remains at the bottom of the Premier League standings going into their matchup with Wolves on Saturday.
