Former Italy striker Paolo Di Canio has blasted Manchester United’s leadership for allowing Scott McTominay to leave the club during the summer transfer window.

After it became evident that McTominay was no longer a first-team starter under Erik ten Hag, the Red Devils agreed to sell him to Italian heavyweights Napoli for a cheap £25.7 million (€30 million/$33 million).

Last season, the Scotland international scored ten goals and three assists in 43 games for United. However, he only appeared in 18 Premier League games for United, as the Dutchman regularly shifted the midfield.

After Manuel Ugarte’s signing from PSG was almost finalized, the decision was made to enable McTominay to move to Serie A, and the 27-year-old has already made an impression in Naples.

McTominay has been a standout performer for Antonio Conte’s club since joining, scoring twice and assisting once in his previous three outings.

Indeed, Napoli has had a fantastic start to the new season, sitting atop Serie A with 16 points from seven games, with McTominay playing a key role in their success thus far.

In an interview with Il Mattino, Di Canio was astonished by the Old Trafford club’s decision to transfer the midfielder, saying: “I would go to those at Manchester United to arrest all the directors – how can you give away McTominay?”

Indeed, Di Canio believes McTominay has the potential to win a title with Napoli, something the Red Devils have not done in almost a decade. He went on to say, “If Inter and Juventus keep doing this, with these slowdowns, it’s OK. They can achieve it even if the others improve, but only if Napoli improves in offensive movements, defensive work, and nastiness throughout the 90-minute game.”

Di Canio joins the expanding list of McTominay fans.

Di Canio is not the only one who has criticized United for allowing McTominay to leave the club, with Italian journalist Riccardo Trevisani also commenting on the sale and how it is presently ruining the careers of other players at the club.

He told Italian site Cronache di Spogliatoio (via Sport Witness): “McTominay scored goals, carried the cross, and was determined, but they kicked him out!” Nothing works at Manchester United, a club that only does foolish things; you can’t predict anything.

“They murdered every player, [Rasmus] Hojlund, De Ligt, Antony, Rashford, and now [Joshua] Zirkzee, even Casemiro; it’s a farce; there is no similar team; they should be jailed.

“PSG are scientists by comparison! They have fired managers, coaches, and players in recent years. They don’t know what they’re doing.

The Scotland international will return to play for his club following the latest international break when Napoli travel to Empoli on Sunday, October 20.

The cost of Ten Hag’s dismissal is exposed as the clock ticks down on Maguire’s tenure.

In other United news, the club is expected to pay up to £14 million (€16.7 million/$18.3 million) if they opt to fire the under-pressure Ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s future as Manchester United manager has been heavily discussed in recent weeks, as the team continues to fall short of expectations on the pitch. Sections of the Manchester United supporters have called for a new manager following 3-0 home defeats to Liverpool and Tottenham, as well as the club’s unimpressive European play.

According to The Telegraph, if Manchester United decides to sell Ten Hag soon, the club’s leadership will have to approve a massive £14 million settlement.

Meanwhile, TEAMtalk can tell that United have informed defensive mainstay Harry Maguire what he has to do to win a new contract, as his current term expires at the end of the season.

IN FOCUS – McTominay is already showing Man United up.

As Ten Hag continues to experiment with his midfield in pursuit of the proper balance, McTominay is already having an impact at his new club.In his four Serie A appearances, the former Red Devils player has started two as an offensive midfielder and one as a No. 8.

In a tiny sample size, he is already averaging 1.5 shots per game to go with his two goals across all competitions, and he has completed 83% of his passes, leaving Conte pleased with his start in Italy.

Indeed, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has praised McTominay’s ability to play many midfield roles.

Antonio Conte claimed: “Scott is a complete player, versatile, who can be a trequartista behind the striker, he can be a mezz’ala in a three-man midfield, play in a two-man midfield or even wide in a 5-4-1 with licence to attack.”
