Luis Díaz and the most recent Liverpool injury and return schedule as two players opt out of national duty
Current injury updates for Liverpool and anticipated return dates as the international break approaches. While Luis Díaz left with Colombia, the other two withdrew.

A training session in Barranquilla, Colombia, on November 15, 2023, features Colombian forward Luis Díaz (2nd-L) and midfielder James Rodriguez (R) with their teammates. The matches are ahead of Colombia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup South American qualification football matches against Brazil and Paraguay.

Just prior to the international break, Liverpool simply ran out of steam. After performing miracles with a squad decimated by injuries for weeks, Jürgen Klopp’s quadruple dream came to an end with an FA Cup quarterfinal loss at Old Trafford.

It’s difficult to evaluate because, in spite of its issues, Liverpool performed admirably to defeat Manchester United. Although Klopp could not continue to ignore the realities of his crowded treatment room indefinitely, the details of the game must be considered in a larger context even though they may not be directly related to injuries and exhaustion.

Therefore, there is hope that this international break may be well-timed in that regard. It allows players to recuperate without having to miss any more crucial Liverpool games.

The trade-off, though, is the possibility that players may sustain additional injuries while serving abroad. At this point, all Klopp can do is cross his fingers for the people who have left to reunite with their national teams.

We intend to provide you with updates over the coming days. Here’s the current status of injuries involving Liverpool.

Darwin Núñez, Luis Díaz, and Cody Gakpo
Awkwardly, Klopp revealed after the match that three of his players, all forwards, had sustained injuries during the match against Manchester United. By the end of extra time, Luis Díaz, Darwin Núñez, and Cody Gakpo all had grievances of one kind or another.

As a result, Núñez has been left out of Uruguay’s squad for the forthcoming internationals, missing the March matches along with Mohamed Salah. There is hope that it is merely a preventative measure, though.

Díaz and Gakpo, meanwhile, have reported for duty with their respective countries—Colombia and the Netherlands. Even though it is evident from this that the injuries were not severe, Klopp will still be monitoring their involvement from the couch.

Potential dates of return: March 31 against Brighton

Konaté Ibrahima
Ibrahima Konaté missed both the crucial Premier League matchup with Manchester City and failed to return in time for the match against Manchester United. That comes after Klopp’s unexpectedly potent team defeated Sparta Prague in the second leg, forcing him off the field.

The manager did, however, mention a “race” to be fit for the Old Trafford match, with Konaté not far behind. Indeed, he has been called up by France and has been snapped in training, which is something else Liverpool will be closely watching.

Potential return date: against Brighton on March 31.

Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Curtis Jones
After the international break, a few of the longer-term absentees ought to be prepared to make a comeback. Before an injury ended his hopes of receiving his first call-up, Curtis Jones was being closely monitored by England; however, he is anticipated to return to Liverpool when domestic play resumes.

If there are no more setbacks, Klopp stated that Trent Alexander-Arnold and Diogo Jota are roughly a week behind. With all three possibly available for the league rematch against Manchester United, this would be another important trio to have back in the fold.

Jones’ potential return date is March 31 against Brighton, while Jota and Alexander-Arnold’s return date is April 7 against Manchester United.

The most notable omission from Klopp’s most recent fitness update was Alisson. Among Jones, Jota, and Alexander-Arnold, the Brazilian stopper was not named as a contender for an early comeback following the internationals.

The manager insisted that Alisson’s season would not end despite previously characterizing the setback as “rather serious.” Luckily, Caoimhín Kelleher has been doing a fantastic job filling in for him in the interim.

Date of potential return unknown.

Stefan Bajčetić
The exciting news is that Stefan Bajčetić is back in the gym. Comparing it to his own “pre-season” before he’s ready to play with the whole team, Klopp said.

Liverpool will, of course, proceed with extreme caution when reintegrating the young player, who has missed the most of the season following a breakout campaign. He only has 15 games left in the season, all of which will be crucial, so it’s unlikely that he’ll play a big role.

Still, there’s no denying that Bajčetić’s return will bolster the team. Although a specific date is unknown, it doesn’t seem too far off.

Date of potential return unknown.

Ben Doak, Joël Matip, and Thiago
After playing Arsenal in January after missing the entire season, Thiago experienced yet another setback. Klopp has acknowledged that he has no idea if the Spaniard will suit up for Liverpool once more.

He thus rejoins the group of chronic absentees. Joël Matip, who may have played his final game for the Reds after sustaining ligament damage in December, puts him in good company.

Ben Doak, a young player, has been out for several months. It’s interesting to note that, at the most recent update, he remained in the Europa League squad while Matip was substituted, indicating that the Scot has a better chance of getting back to full strength before the season ends.

Potential return dates: Season’s end, or around that time.
