Thiago, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Andy Robertson – Liverpool injury reports and comeback timetables
Dominik Szoboszlai became the sixth player to be injured after Liverpool defeated Newcastle United 4-2; this added to Jurgen Klopp’s growing list of issues.

Liverpool started 2024 on a positive note and moved three points clear of first place in the Premier League with a 4-2 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield. Still, it was a victory that may have come at a price.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of the Reds, confirmed Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury after the game. “We wanted to take him off,” said Klopp. That was the plan, but he was running a minute late since he felt his hamstring in the prior scenario.
Of course, we don’t currently know its entire scope. We have to wait it out.
Given that Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic are still on the fringes and that Liverpool really didn’t need it Wataru Endo, the midfield captain of Japan, will now miss several games due to his involvement in the Asian Cup. The team has also said goodbye to the famous Mohamed Salah, who scored twice in the Reds’ triumph over Newcastle before playing for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Mostly Read 1. Because of an injury that occurred recently and a known issue, Jurgen Klopp might start seven different players against Arsenal.
2. I’d prefer to see Joe Gomez in the middle of the field if Liverpool doesn’t sign anyone in January. 3. Newcastle’s goalie Martin Dubravka interrupts Alan Shearer’s discussion regarding Diogo Jota and the penalty given to Liverpool.
However, given the uproar surrounding the ensuing penalty call, the spectacular ball through to Diogo Jota by the fit-again Alexis Mac Allister, came off the bench, has been all but forgotten. For Klopp, this was encouraging news in terms of injuries.
After recovering from injuries, Jota and Mac Allister may now start their FA Cup third-round match on Sunday against Premier League championship rivals Arsenal. However, in addition to Salah and Endo, who have already passed away, Liverpool may lose seven more players.
Dominik Szoboszlai
Szoboszlai was clearly uncomfortable as he staggered off the Anfield field while holding the back of his leg. It is unclear, though, how much longer Hungary’s skipper will be out of action.
The Reds’ medical staff at the AXA Training Centre will look at that more in the coming days. Szoboszlai’s chances of playing against Arsenal on Saturday, meanwhile, appear slim given that Klopp said it was a hamstring issue.
Date of anticipated return: Not specified
Andy Roberts Robertson hasn’t played since dislocating his shoulder during an international match for Scotland in October, but he could be back in action this month. Surgery kept the left-back from participating in Scotland’s successful bid to advance to Euro 2024 and Liverpool’s rise to the top of the Premier League.
Robertson still needs more flexibility in his shoulder, Klopp said recently in reference to the player’s health. Clearly, that was a significant surgery. He’s still a long way from receiving any kind of teamwork or leadership training.
He is clearly skilled at performing many tasks without properly using his arm, but he also shows how far we still have to go. I think he needs to grow closer and closer for the whole month of January.
Return date anticipated: January

Kostas Tsimikas
Tsimikas, who was substituting for Robertson, suffered a serious injury during Liverpool’s 1-1 Premier League match with Arsenal at home last month. As a result, Liverpool is currently without a reliable left-back.
After being challenged by Gunners winger Bukayo Saka, Tsimikas stumbled into Klopp on the touchline, landing awkwardly on his shoulder. The Greece international was clearly quite uncomfortable from the start. And after the game, his manager verified the bad news. Klopp said, “He broke his collarbone at least.” That is really harmful to us.
Joe Gomez, a well-known center-back or right-back, fills in at left-back at the moment. Still, the Reds have called up young midfielder Owen Beck, who is on loan at Dundee.
Date of anticipated return: Not specified
Thiago Alcantara
Thiago hasn’t played for the Reds since their triumph against West Ham United in April. The midfield player has been battling a hip problem that hopefully needed surgery to fix. The most recent version of Thiago was made available on Friday.
“I think Thiago will participate in team training at some point in January,” said Klopp. “Thiago is also in a wonderful spot at the moment, but we must exercise caution in not using him too quickly. Additionally, the hip problem in and around that area is just a long-term problem.
“There were definitely days when he could have trained with ease, but in the long run, what matters is how he can be back then.”
Return date anticipated: January
Joel Matip
Matip is recovering from surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. The 32-year-old will most likely miss the rest of the season because his contract at Anfield is about to expire.
The center defender sustained injuries on the Anfield field in the 70th minute of the exciting 4-3 victory over Fulham as a result of an off-the-ball incident. Unfortunately, I knew from the first second that it was an ACL tear. That’s how it all seemed to be. Very unfortunate,” said Klopp.
Date of anticipated return: Not specified
Ben Doak Doak was pulled off the field recently because of a knee injury he received while playing Chelsea’s under-21 team. This disappointed the teenage winger, who had relished representing the first team in the Europa League and Carabao Cup.
The Scot is not likely to be rushed back anytime soon. Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said, “That’s not a good one,” in reference to Doak’s bad health. Surgery was necessary since he tore his meniscus on the side.
“It will take extra time to complete. Given his youth, physical fitness, and optimism, there’s a good chance he’ll be back stronger. But when he comes back, we need him to bring the same fervor and determination as when he was playing the ball. If it takes him a while, we’ll wait for him.
Date of anticipated return: Not specified
Stefan Bajcetic
Bajcetic’s young Liverpool career has been incredibly frustrating following a number of injury setbacks.
After suffering a stress response in his adductor in March of last year, he had an incredible rookie season that ended too soon. Bajcetic returned to action in September, playing in the Carabao Cup and Europa League, following a calf injury. But that game versus LASK Linz ended up being his last.
A date for the midfielder’s recuperation has not yet been set. Speaking about Bajcetic at a news conference recently, Klopp remarked, “With Stefan, if you ask Stefan how he feels, he says ‘good.'” Could you work on it? Yes, he could. All we have to do is use common sense. That’s the way things really are.
