Scott McTominay always understood Man Utd ‘DNA’ but couldn’t outrun his limitations – Napoli sale shows INEOS are serious about stamping out culture of mediocrity

They made the right choice by getting rid of the highly motivated school graduate as they try to get back to the top of the game.

A young fan named Skye gave Scott McTominay a bracelet to “remember United” as he left Old Trafford for the last time. Suddenly, the weight of the moment hit him. “Not at all!” That’s really nice of you, thank you. It’s going on. That will always be with me.”

The Scotland player is about to sign a £25 million ($34 million) deal to join Serie A giants Napoli. He has played 255 times for Manchester United in all categories. That wasn’t why he was so upset, though. You could say that McTominay is leaving the only home he’s ever known.

United first signed McTominay as a young player after seeing how talented he was as a five-year-old in Preston’s development centre. After 15 years, he made his first-team start as a late replacement in a Premier League game against Crystal Palace. He had spent “endless hours in the gym” to get ready for the game.

McTominay would go on to help score 37 goals for United, winning the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup and getting two contract extensions along the way. After signing the second one in June 2020, he said, “I hope that my love for the club shows every time I step on the pitch.” “I’ll continue to give everything for this club whenever I pull on the shirt.”

McTominay always kept his word, but he didn’t belong as a constant at Old Trafford. He got on the team by being a hard worker, not because he was a great football player. Now that he is 27, United’s new part-owners INEOS are doing the right thing by moving him on. The team needs to get rid of the culture of failure that has held them back since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure if they want to return to their former glory.
