Man City FFP: Pundit reveals verdict that he’s ‘heard’ as City face claims from ‘outside the Premier League’

As one commentator shares what he has “heard” regarding Man City’s FFP case, the team may be subject to compensation claims from “outside the Premier League.”

In September, an impartial commission hearing was held to review 115 accusations made against the Citizens by the Premier League.

Back in 2018, the Premier League launched an inquiry into Man City. Following several legal setbacks, charges were eventually brought in February 2023, and the team was referred to an impartial commission.

A club’s obligation as a Premier League member to comply with UEFA’s financial regulations and the league’s own profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) is one of the charges against the Citizens. Other charges include the need to accurately report financial information, including the value of sponsorship deals and the submission of manager and player pay information.

Additionally, they are charged with not cooperating with the league’s investigation. Overall, there are fees associated with each season from 2009–10 to 2022–23.

On the day of the charges, Man City released a statement vehemently refuting the accusations and expressing their appreciation for the chance for an impartial panel “to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of our position.”

“As such, we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all,” the club continued.

Manchester United, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Arsenal had “lodged legal notices reserving the right to seek a payout if City are found guilty of serious breaches,” according to the Times earlier this month.

If the Citizens are proven guilty, clubs “outside of the Premier League” may potentially seek compensation, according to former Man City financial consultant Stefan Borson.

“If the major charges are proven, it’s likely there will be cases for the clubs – possibly even beyond the four mentioned in the media,” Borson told Football Insider.

“If City were only found guilty of not cooperating with the Premier League, that would be a different situation, and I don’t think any compensation will be payable.”

That wouldn’t result in a sports advantage, so it wouldn’t be something that gives rise to claims. Whether City is found guilty of the major allegations will be the main emphasis. After that, a number of clubs will attempt to present their case.

Each will have to demonstrate causation and provide their own account of the losses that transpired during that time. I believe that there will probably be claims, and the resolution process will be drawn out.
