Following an accident involving his wife and two children, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was found to be alive.

unquestionably one of the best defenders to have ever played, but not as highly regarded in his native nation.

In nearly nine years, Van Dijk has made 64 appearances for his country while serving as captain of the Netherlands.

You would think he would be well respected back home after establishing himself as the best defender in the world.

However, this isn’t always the case, as prominent former players and journalists like Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit have been critical of the Dutchman, particularly during the previous season when he wasn’t performing up to par.

The latter even claimed that Van Dijk “thinks he’s better than the rest” in an interview with Ziggo Sport.

Six-time Netherlands cap winner and former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld has bemoaned the attitude and questioned why some have been so critical.

“If you saw the documentary about Beckham, for example, we have a tendency in Holland like, I think in England it’s sort of similar,” he said to This Is Anfield.

It seems like a very peculiar way of thinking, and it also begs the question of why there are no legends games.

“I believe that legends are treated very differently in England and Spain than they are in Holland. I’ve always said that the Dutch are pessimistic and envious, so yeah.

Westerveld continued, mentioning a number of former players, such as Frank Rijkaard and Mark van Bommel, and describing how “they’re getting criticised, being old, when they came back to Holland after a great career and played for PSV or Ajax.”

Henderson is still subjected to criticism after just one game, with some even saying that he is too old. The 49-year-old went on, “That’s just the way people think in Holland, especially the media.”

Van Dijk, fortunately, is just playing his game and doesn’t care. They adore him because of the difference with the national team. The public adores him, but the media constantly disparages everyone.

“In Holland, they believe that if a player has one poor performance, he is too old.” Shortsighted I think we call them.”

Van Dijk addressed the camera after Liverpool’s League Cup final victory over Chelsea, saying, “They thought I was finished.”

How wrong was pundit Johan Derksen when he said that Van Dijk was “on his last legs” less than six months ago?

The defender for Liverpool appears to be singled out for criticism by some sections of the media. The media hasn’t been the only group to criticize Liverpool’s Dutch players.

Ryan Gravenberch chose to stay on Merseyside and acclimate to his new surroundings after joining the Reds at the close of the summer transfer window, rather than attending a brief training camp with the Netherlands U21s.

This brought anger from senior manager Ronald Koeman, who said: “We are not happy with [him] refusing to play for his country.”

Boys, it’s best to stick with Liverpool.
