Hidden Reason Why Ex-Premier League official disagrees with Eddie Howe on key Newcastle United incident

Dermot Gallagher, a former Premier League referee, thinks Sam Allison was correct to disallow Fabian Schar’s goal against Fulham.

The Swiss international appeared to have broken the deadlock late on for Newcastle United when he squeezed past Bernd Leno at the near post. But Dan Burn was deemed to have fouled Calvin Bassey during the build-up, prompting a protracted VAR review.

Luckily for the Magpies, Bruno Guimaraes gave them their lead back a few moments later with a first-time effort that had the away end in hysterics. Gaining all three points, the Magpies increased their hopes of qualifying for Europe.

Schar’s goal that was disallowed could have caused controversy if Newcastle had not gone on to win. Publicly critical of VAR, Eddie Howe maintained that his team was denied an earlier lead.

“Live, I believed it to be a target,” he stated to the press. “Dan Burn leaped fairly but aggressively. It was expected that VAR would rule that it was acceptable, so I wasn’t shocked that it went to them.

“I then assumed that the referee would review his decision, which he had stated as a goal, and that he would have the fortitude to do so, but he didn’t. I considered it to be an excellent goal that was rejected.”

Gallagher, a former top-tier official, concurred with Allison in speaking with Sky Sports that Burn fouled Bassey. “He pushes him, he gets above him and stops him from heading the ball,” the Irishman remarked. For me, it is a foul.
