Harry Kane scored his signature goal for Bayern Munich against Arsenal, but the team had to settle for a draw (John Walton/PA).
Harry Kane’s incredible return to North London was spoiled by Arsenal, who scored twice in the second half to salvage a 2-2 draw from an exciting first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.
The German team appeared to be in control at the Emirates Stadium, where the all-time top scorer for Tottenham converted a penalty in the first half to extend his career goal tally against the Gunners to fifteen in twenty games.
Following an early goal by Bukayo Saka, a former Arsenal attacker named Serge Gnabry leveled the score in the 76th minute. Substitute Leandro Trossard then set up a meeting that should take place the following week.
In a thrilling finish, Saka’s penalty kick was saved in stoppage time, and Manuel Neuer’s challenge on Kingsley Coman in the 90th minute nearly gave Bayern a late equalizer.
Not only did England captain Kane score his 39th goal of a fantastic season, but he also played the role of the comic villain, almost sending Gabriel flying with an elbow to the neck.
When Bayern arrived in England, they were about to lose the Bundesliga title for the first time in twelve seasons, having fallen 16 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.
The fact that Gnabry, Kane, and Eric Dier were there—all of whom had played for Tottenham in the past—complicated an already interesting match. But because of a UEFA fine imposed on Bayern fans for hurling fireworks onto the pitch during their last-16 victory over Lazio, the sold-out stadium was empty of traveling spectators.
After just twelve minutes, the ground trembled due to Saka’s sorcery, and the fervent crowd erupted in a thunderous roar upon the arrival of Thomas Tuchel’s troops.
Following Ben White’s release of him inside Bayern’s area as a result of defensive hesitation, the England international set the stage for celebration among the supporters with a magnificent first-time curling strike into the bottom left corner.
White should have repeated similar performances shortly before the Gunners allowed their opponents to equalize in the eighteenth minute, as he squandered a great chance to shoot past the fully recovered Bayern goalkeeper Neuer after receiving a pass from Kai Havertz.
The ball was eventually passed to Sergey Gnabry, who completed a through-ball from Leon Goretzka by slipping it between the legs of the Gunners goalkeeper, following a clumsy handoff from Gabriel to David Raya.
Arsenal advanced to this round of the competition for the first time since 2010 after recording four straight clean sheets.
Their usually solid defense let them down again a half hour into the game, as Kane reveled in subdued cheers from the crowd.
Raya broke early, but Kane calmly curled the ball into the bottom right corner from 12 yards out, making life even more difficult for one of Spurs’ fiercest opponents: Leroy Sane, whose deft run from halfway was only broken by William Saliba’s trailing leg.
Even though the early goal gave Arsenal hope, Sane almost put the team ahead 2-0 at halftime, and only White and Martin Odegaard’s last-ditch efforts kept him out of the goal.
After the interval, Arsenal fought hard, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Kane continued to be a threat on the break for Bayern, even though he was only given a yellow card for tripping Gabriel. However, his long-range effort missed the mark.
On what was certain to be a challenging evening, Mikel Arteta’s Premier League team leaders were tied as time was running out.
Gabriel Jesus, a fellow substitute, created space inside Bayern’s penalty area and set up Trossard for a thunderous finish that went under Neuer’s crossbar and into the bottom left corner.
As yet another twist appeared likely in a wild and unpredictable match, Bayern substitute Coman poked the crossbar. The crowd jeered at Swedish referee Glenn Nyberg for not penalizing Neuer for what seemed to be a trip on Saka.
