Graeme Souness, a friend and former colleague of Alan Hansen, has been spearheading messages of support for the severely ill former Liverpool star and Match of the Day pundit.

Graeme Souness has acknowledged that, while his friend Alan Hansen is still in the hospital in critical condition, he has been praying for him to get better.

During his playing career, Hansen won numerous titles with Liverpool. He has been hospitalised since becoming unwell. The football community has come together to show support for the Scot, who has also gained popularity for his Match of the Day punditry. In his Friday speech, Souness referred to his countryman as “one of the good guys” and said he thought Hansen was a wonderful friend. The 71-year-old honoured Hansen as well when commentating on Scotland’s loss to Germany in the Euro 2024 tournament for ITV.

Many people’s thoughts will always be with Hansen. This includes Souness, who expounded on his sentiments on his friend in a newspaper piece. For The Mail, Souness said, “It’s a desperate time for his wife, Janet, his children, Adam and Lucy, and everybody who is close to him.” “I don’t know to whom I’m praying, but I’m praying that he’ll be back soon to resume his custom of taking p***.

“I don’t know anyone who has anything negative to say about Alan, which makes him a rare breed in life. The greatest centre back in football history. He is a mischievous person with a cruel sense of humour. Excellent companionship, a captivating narrator, and seemingly a treasured experience. Souness thought back on their days together on the pitch with nostalgia as well. “That banter we had and that we used to share at Liverpool, those are days I wish I could live all over again,” he said. He is the epitome of a man. It is astounding to me that he is battling for his life.”

The remarks mirrored those made by Souness on ITV on Friday. “Listen, he was a midfield player’s dream—I had the pleasure of playing with him. During the broadcast, he said, “He passed the ball at the right weight at the right time from the right angle.” “Just a phenomenal football player, the greatest center-half ever, in my opinion. Though I am aware that’s a strong statement, I genuinely think that. When I saw him up close, he was an extremely talented performer.

Additionally, as a human. You know how people often say things like “they’re a great guy” or “they were a great guy” when someone is struggling with illness? He really was a wonderful man, I assure you.”
