Celtic are looking for their next permanent manager, with a former Birmingham City and Everton player being considered.
A former Everton and Birmingham City player has been contacted about the vacant Celtic manager position, while Craig Bellamy removes himself from the situation.

The Hoops face Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals on Sunday, with a chance to face St Mirren in the final in December, capping up a tumultuous week in Glasgow’s east end. Brendan Rodgers resigned as manager on Monday, following by a stunning verbal attack on the Irishman from big shareholder Dermot Desmond.

Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney are holding down the fort until a permanent successor can be found. Lee Carsley, an Everton fan and former Birmingham City player, is one of those who has crossed their minds.

Who is next Celtic manager contender Lee Carsley?

He is now England’s U21 manager and previously served as interim manager at the senior level when Thomas Tuchel arrived. The no-nonsense midfielder became a star at Everton from 2002 to 2008 before becoming captain of his hometown team, Birmingham City, and helping them win promotion to the Premier League. He is a Republic of Ireland international who coached at Brentford, Coventry City, and Birmingham City before joining England’s junior ranks in 2020.

There, Carsley is highly regarded, and Alan Nixon reports Celtic has made contact with him about being Rodgers’ successor. With his chances of becoming Tuchel’s England replacement looking promising, the former Everton and Birmingham City player is prepared to try his luck with the FA once more.

Craig Bellamy, meanwhile, has been linked, but the Wales manager intends to concentrate on his team’s World Cup qualification ambitions. The reporter said on Patreon that despite Celtic’s interest, Lee Carsley is sticking with the FA and the England under-21 post. The former Republic of Ireland coach has been contacted about the position, but is content where he is.

What does Lee Carsley believe about Celtic’s next managerial opportunity?
“Carsley would only return to club football if the move appealed to him, and he is a strong candidate for the entire England post if Thomas Tuchel leaves. Celtic have also been looking into Craig Bellamy, but the Wales manager is settled and unwilling to transfer. Even if Wales fails to qualify for the World Cup, this is unlikely to change his opinion.

Carsley said of the top England post last year: “No, I did not formally apply for it.” Because, hopefully… I’ve been doing the U21s and I’m quite delighted with my job. I work for the FA and was asked to lead the senior team, which is an honor. It was the proudest moment of my career.

“I am in a really fortunate situation because I am on the inside and can see how much potential this team has. It is one of the top jobs in international football. There are few occupations where you have a chance of winning. I feel the new coach has a very strong chance of winning, and we deserve the finest one available.”
