Russell Martin Is Supposed to Make an Unexpected Comeback to Southampton After Will Continues to Sack
According to reports, Russell Martin is expected to make a spectacular comeback to Southampton after the team fired Will Still after 13 games into the season.

On Sunday night, the Championship team announced Still’s departure. The Saints are currently in 21st place and have only won four games since he was hired from Lens in the summer.

Eleven months after his departure, Southampton is reportedly planning to begin negotiations with its 39-year-old former boss Martin regarding a potential return to St Mary’s Stadium.

Martin, who led Southampton back to the Premier League during his first stint as manager, is still a strong contender for the position. In the 2024 play-off final, his team famously defeated Leeds United 1-0 to achieve promotion.

Martin briefly played for Rangers after leaving the South Coast club, but he was fired after just 123 days due to a subpar start to the season. In October, the Gers were in the bottom half of the Scottish Premiership after his penultimate game, a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Many in the Saints management still think highly of Martin because of the stability and promotion he previously brought to the team, despite the fact that his possession-based philosophy was criticized during his time at Southampton and Rangers.

Martin led Southampton through a challenging 2024–25 Premier League season, winning just one of 16 games before to his firing in December 2024. With seven games left in that season, the squad was ultimately demoted back to the Championship.

Now that Southampton has another managerial opening and their chances of being promoted are rapidly dwindling, they may once more go to Martin to turn around their season and rebuild faith at St Mary’s.
