This summer, Man Utd made adjustments to Erik ten Hag's backroom team, and a new member is anticipated to join.

Some Manchester United supporters may not recognise the club’s coaching staff come season 2024–2025 after Mitchell van der Gaag and Eric Ramsay left Erik ten Hag’s backroom team. Ramsay left in February to manage in the United States, but Van der Gaag’s departure was confirmed this month. The latter was Ten Hag’s trusted assistant for three years during stints with Ajax and United, but he ‘wanted to pursue a career in management.’ Their departures will undoubtedly have an effect in 2024–2025.

Ten Hag leads the team tactically, and his coaches reinforce his ideas, according to sources. It is believed that Hake and Van Nisterlrooy took up the crucial roles played by Van der Gaag and Ramsay in setting up the squad and helping to organise training.

While it may not thrill fans to learn about Ten Hag’s backstage operations on a daily basis, it does give meaning to the performances that are created on matchdays.

One can interpret Ten Hag’s new coaching staff both favourably and unfavourably. Although Ten Hag has lost dependable allies and it’s intriguing that both Hake and Van Nisterlooy were managers in their prior positions, it’s possible that these changes will lessen the manager’s authority. Van Nisterlooy’s appointment is exciting.

Before accepting the opportunity to coach at United, Van Nisterlooy was in negotiations to take over as manager of Burnley. A pessimist may contend that he is well-positioned to take over as manager if Ten Hag is fired at any point this season.

How the new coaching additions impact the team and training is still to be seen. In addition, United has brought in Jelle ten Rouwelaar as their new goalkeeping coach. Meanwhile, Andreas Georgson, the manager of Lillestrom, will join the team as a set-piece coach.

According to reports from Norway, United will pay roughly £280,000 to release Georgson from his contract with Lillestrom. Georgson was Southampton’s set-piece coach when Old Trafford technical director Jason Wilcox was in the boardroom at St Mary’s Stadium.

The Wilcox connection is intriguing as it reveals the person in charge of the appointment. The idea is believed to be the brainchild of United’s technical director, who plans to recruit someone to supervise a department that Ten Hag assumed greater authority over upon his appointment from Ajax in 2022.

Georgson has an impressive resume, having coached Brentford, Southampton, and Arsenal in set-piece duties. It is debatable if Ten Hag would select a new set-piece coach on his own. That is only for him to answer, and he has the option to respond politely in public.

Ten Hag is reportedly “much more involved” in set-pieces than his predecessors, and a set-play analyst’s role is claimed to foster collaboration in the process. Georgson’s appointment will alter the present set-piece strategy both on and off the pitch, and it appears that Ten Hag will have less influence.

In the Premier League the previous season, United scored nine goals from set pieces; only five teams were able to score less. Additionally, just five teams were worse than United’s 14 goals conceded in the league from set-piece situations, indicating the need for improvement.

If Georgson is upset about Ten Hag’s power being diminished, he should bring something that will probably placate him. However, the Dutchman sensed that this appointment was merely the most recent move to weaken his authority. There might be a power struggle going on at Carrington, but if United is winning games in the Premier League on a regular basis, it won’t matter.
