Only one transfer is needed for Liverpool to perhaps push Jürgen Klopp towards a triple or quadruple in January. The Reds should definitely hire someone.

The new year is almost here, and the holidays are past. Additionally, Liverpool has a real chance to win big in 2024. The top three teams are still vying for three more trophies at this halfway stage of the Premier League season.

Few would have ventured to speculate that Manchester City would have lost as many points as it has, and even fewer would have guessed that Liverpool would be this far along in its recovery. These two factors working together have put Jürgen Klopp’s team well in the running for the title.

Manchester City might continue their winning run, as usual, but it also doesn’t seem likely that Pep Guardiola’s squad will be as good this time. A closer sprint to the finish line appears likely, while it’s always possible, and Arsenal has a good shot as well.

However, if even small changes are likely to have a big impact, Liverpool should consider making a January move. Despite Wataru Endō’s departure for AFCON, Alexis Mac Allister’s comeback should compensate for the Japanese. Therefore, the team’s current main priority is not a midfield player.

Liverpool should seize the opportunity to sign a genuinely exceptional holding player, but it doesn’t seem certain that this will happen in the midst of the season. If the right chance arose, that would be something to consider.

But more crucially, Liverpool needs to do all in its power to find a suitable candidate within its defence. Although Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson will both return to duty this season—Robertson perhaps even before the end of the next month—2024 will still necessitate the acquisition of a left-sided defender. It would be a good idea to attempt it now.

Liverpool needs to recruit a man who can play on the left side of their centre-back pairing in order to replace Virgil van Dijk and offer another full-back option. On the back line, Joe Gomez can play all positions, but not all at once. He will have to start every game at left-back for the next several weeks at the absolute least, which will significantly reduce the number of choices at the other positions.

Liverpool should consider their choices at the back as soon as possible, especially as Joël Matip’s contract expires at the end of the season and Van Dijk is already 32 years old. And strengthening a defence that is beginning to show its age may require such purchase.

In the past, Klopp has maintained that it can be challenging to find the ideal player during the winter transfer window. Liverpool, meanwhile, is in a position that should be exploited and that it most likely didn’t expect.

If Liverpool’s long-term goal is to acquire a left-sided defender, it should be clear that doing so will help Klopp win another Premier League championship and perhaps one or two more (the Reds are the favourites to win the Carabao Cup and the Europa League). Numerous names will be brought up, but one action might be the difference that prevents Liverpool from ever wondering “what if?”
