It is said that Thomas Tuchel is no longer a candidate to manage Manchester United.

The announcement follows on Sunday’s reports that Tuchel met Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United’s co-owner, in a covert meeting in Monaco. Following the announcement in February that the former Chelsea manager was leaving Bayern Munich, the German has been strongly linked to United.

The 2023–24 season is presently being reviewed by United, and manager Erik ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford is being evaluated. Although a decision is anticipated this week, it seems likely that Tuchel won’t be available this summer should the team decide to search for a new manager.

Tuchel’s transfer assertion
According to The Times, Tuchel informed Ratcliffe that he wanted Antonio Rudiger, the centre back for Real Madrid, to join United. The two had previously collaborated at Chelsea, but in order to sign him, United would have needed to put together a costly transfer deal similar to the one that was utilised to get Casemiro in 2022.

According to Isaac Seelochan of MEN Sport, Rudiger has significantly improved at Real Madrid and has been a pillar of the Spanish team’s defence, which has helped them win numerous Champions Leagues. The German might be a strong defensive core addition to United with Lisandro Martinez.

But at thirty-one, this would feel like a throwback to the Casemiro transfer a few years ago, and it is unlikely that Ineos will take that path. Given the potential financial stakes, it hasn’t worked for United before and isn’t expected to do so this time either.

Move by Pochettino improbable
It is unlikely that Mauricio Pochetino will take over as United’s manager going forward, according to The Telegraph. Since departing Chelsea earlier this month, the Argentine has not had a job.

It is difficult to see how United will find a better manager than Ten Hag, according to MEN Sport’s Isaac Seelochan, given that Tuchel and Pochettino seem doubtful candidates. It makes the choice on the Dutchman’s future all the more strangely delayed.

If Ten Hag departs, is Roberto de Zerbi now the front-runner to take over as United’s manager? To be honest, there isn’t a very good selection available. It is somewhat perplexing to hear reports that Gareth Southgate is Ireland’s top choice.

It begs the question of whether they will be forced to retain Ten Hag in command at least through the start of the following season.
