One of the primary causes of our dominance has been made clear by the numerous trophies that Chelsea won during the 2000s. This period of success was marked by a recurring theme.

In an interview with Gary Lineker for Match Of Their Day this weekend, Ashley Cole—so often our dependable left-back during our trophy-laden recent years—reflected on his record number of FA Cup final victories and explained why, in his opinion, the Blues were so successful after we won our first Premier League title under Jose Mourinho in 2005.

Ashley says, “I was signed by Jose Mourinho, but when I look back at the group we had when I first joined, it was already a winning team.”

“One of the main reasons I joined Chelsea was because we had some big players here already who knew the club’s culture and what it meant to play here on a daily basis.”

Players such as Petr Cech, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, and John Terry. These are players who understand what it takes to play for Chelsea, and they would impart that knowledge to you.

Every day they demonstrated that they knew what was expected of them. diligence, commitment, and a desire to grow and advance.

“What Jose accomplished for Chelsea was incredible in terms of the assurance and faith he bestowed upon us.” That stability came from him. We just accepted it when he would say, “Okay, you’ve done it, you’ve won things, you’ve improved, and now this is what I’m expecting from you on a daily basis.”

Throughout that time, the Blues have had a number of managers. In 2013, Mourinho made a second visit to Stamford Bridge as our manager. Frank Lampard, Cole’s former teammate and our all-time top scorer, is our current manager.

The former England international, who came to us from Arsenal in a trade that also saw William Gallas move across London to join the Gunners, believes that the managers who experienced the greatest success at Chelsea were those who left the core group of “winners” in place, including the players he just mentioned: Terry, Lampard, Drogba, and Cech.

Naturally, every manager aspires to infuse the team with their unique flavor or philosophy. Ashley continues. However, it didn’t really work for any manager who tried to impose that too much on the team. People would talk about player power and other things like that, but that wasn’t the case; instead, we simply understood our strengths and weaknesses as well as what players could and couldn’t do. We also simply grew accustomed to working as a cohesive team and learning how to win.

Which manager could take over didn’t really matter because if they had too much power over the team, it would undermine the arrangements we already had.

Naturally, we all held him in high regard for his accomplishments as a manager and player throughout his career, but we also respected him as a man for maintaining the status quo with that strong foundation. He only slightly altered our pre-arrival activities and our methods in light of his beliefs.

We had a great group, and we may have needed some minor adjustments here and there, but nothing “full-circle.” I also believe that any managers who came in “full blast,” declaring themselves as the boss, and making drastic changes didn’t really work because we didn’t need them.

“We had a really good core of players, so I feel like we kept winning with different managers who just made small adjustments.”

Carlo Ancelotti taught me a lot. He created a welcoming and secure environment for training. He was there to support you when you needed it and encouraged you to enjoy training so much that you wanted to go every day.
