Ian Wright slammed for old Liverpool comments after Bukayo Saka penalty claim
The legendary Ian Wright of Arsenal has been brought to mind for remarks he made earlier in the season regarding a Liverpool star. Regarding Bukayo Saka’s dive, he hasn’t been as passionate.
The supporters of Liverpool are bringing up Ian Wright, the former striker for Arsenal, and his remarks from earlier in the season about Diogo Jota. It follows after Bukayo Saka experienced a comparable circumstance on Tuesday night.
Saka, 22, got things started in yesterday’s Champions League match at the Emirates Stadium against Bayern Munich. The England international opened the score in the 12th minute, but Serge Gnabry, a former player for Arsenal, and Harry Kane, a Tottenham Hotspur legend, soon made it 2-1 to Bayern before halftime.
Leandro Trossard gave Mikel Arteta’s team an equalizer with just over ten minutes remaining, but the controversy broke just before the final siren. With German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer closing in, Saka, who was bearing down on goal, maneuvered the ball around the approaching challenge and appeared certain to score.
Sadly, he didn’t, Arsenal supporters. After the two players collided, Saka said that Neuer had impeded him. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, setting up a rematch at the Allianz Arena after the referee and VAR team swiftly determined it was not a penalty.
After the game, Wright discussed the incident on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, saying, “Not a pen for me.” Munich has work to be done.” Given that Wright’s response to Jota’s similar situation earlier in the season was somewhat less reserved, this has provoked a strong response from the Liverpool fan base.
On New Year’s Day against Newcastle United, the Portuguese international rounded the goalkeeper and had a similar opportunity to score, but instead was sent off for a penalty. Wright criticized Jota for not scoring after the game, even though Liverpool won 4-2 in the end. “I’d rather take a knee for a penalty than shoot the ball into an empty net,” he stated. I’ve seen everything now.”
Wright’s remarks from today have been quickly brought up by Liverpool supporters, with one writing: “Saka won’t get the stick Jota did because he’s English.” Despite being past the keeper, he attempted to purchase a pen.” Another said, “Wonder if Ian Wright and Alan Shearer will call him a disgrace like they did for Jota.”
Martin Keown, who felt Arsenal should have been given a penalty, disagreed with Wright’s assessment of the Saka decision. “Whoa. I mistook it for a fine. “On TNT Sports, I felt the referee played a good game,” he stated.
Although there is a suspicion that Saka touches the ball, goalie Neuer actually moves in the direction of the ball before emerging to pose a challenge. That is a daily penalty for me.”
