Supporters have criticized Jamie Carragher for being “completely wrong” in his assessment of why Bayern Munich did not receive a penalty against Arsenal.

Following a bizarre handball incident that resulted in a thrilling 2-2 Champions League first-leg draw between Bayern Munich and Arsenal at the Emirates, Thomas Tuchel was incensed that his team was not given a penalty.

While Bukayo Saka’s last-minute spot kick denial following his collision with Manuel Neuer dominated TNT Sports’ post-match coverage at first, Tuchel was incensed about another incident that occurred halfway through the second half when Gabriel picked up the ball in his box.

Goalkeeper David Raya played the ball into the path of the Brazilian, who picked it up at random.

Referee Glenn Nyberg, according to Tuchel, decided it was a “kid’s mistake” and declined to issue a penalty.

“I felt like a lot of little decisions went against us,” the head coach of Bayern Munich stated. The referee erred greatly by choosing not to issue a penalty. They put the ball down, the referee whistles, the goalkeeper hands it to the defender (Gabriel), who picks it up in his hands. I realize this is a ridiculous scenario.

“We are extremely irate about the explanation provided on the field. He assured our players that the penalty was a child’s error and that he would not call a similar one in a quarterfinal.

This is an awful, awful explanation because it implies that he is now evaluating handballs, regardless of whether they are the fault of an adult or a child. We are upset since such a significant decision goes against our wishes.

But Jamie Carragher claimed on X after the game that the referee had made the right choice in declining to call a penalty, calling it a “common sense” move.

Carragher stated: “@ChristinaUnkel is right on; the referee applied common sense.

“Arsenal did not gain any advantage; rather, there was a confusion regarding the goal kick taker, as there was no Munich player present when the incident occurred.

“You’d be sick if that went against you, especially in a CL quarter-final.”

Several X fans have retaliated against Carragher’s analysis of the circumstances. “Sorry Jamie, but you have this completely wrong,” said one person. There must be a fine. It simply must.

Since many players will subsequently use the same argument for other purposes, this is a “mistake” that shouldn’t be penalized. Either regulations exist or they don’t.

Give over, Jamie, said the second. When in doubt, always use perspective to gain understanding.

“You’re going to tell me that if this was a Champions League final between Arsenal and Liverpool, and your team, Liverpool, were down 1-0 in the 95th minute, with Arsenal fans going crazy, cheering, and about to lift the trophy, with whistles blowing and scarfs being waved in jubilation from the Arsenal fans, and then this happens, are you really saying you will still be sitting there, cool as a cucumber, saying, ‘Naa, you’d have to be sick for thinking that was a penalty’?

It’s the game’s regulations! Raya passed it after the referee blew his whistle, and the ball was collected. It’s just a penalty, nothing more.

According to a third, “back passes don’t count in this context because I could just pass the ball back to my keeper and they can pick it up as long as there is no advantage and no pressing.”
