Mesut Ozil was among the most technically skilled footballers of his generation. The former Arsenal player was a maverick on the pitch, and few players in sports history have passed the ball as well as he did. Whether for Arsenal, Werder Bremen, or Real Madrid, he was a creative force to be reckoned with.

The last few years of his career, however, were a mixed bag, and after only four games for Istanbul Başakşehir in the 2022/23 season, he chose to retire in March 2023. As a result, he left football and is now pursuing a completely other career.

Mesut Ozil’s Playing Career

He shone for multiple top teams

After breaking through at Schalke 04 in 2006, Ozil swiftly established himself as one of the most promising young attacking midfielders in football, earning a move to Werder Bremen in 2008. He took things to the next level with the Bundesliga side, and after only two years at Weserstadion, he was signed by one of the world’s biggest football clubs, Real Madrid.

His potential was achieved with Los Blancos, as he became one of the world’s best midfielders during his time in Spain. During his three years at the Santiago Bernabeu, he impressed and even replaced Kaka in the starting lineup after the iconic Brazilian’s injury. During his career at Madrid, he won a La Liga title and played 159 games, scoring 108 goals. In his final season in Spain, he finished with 25 assists, an astounding result that displayed his creative abilities.

Shortly after, he joined Arsenal in 2013 and began the best period of his career. He immediately became a fan favourite at the Emirates, and while he was thriving for Arsenal, he was also having great success with the German national team, winning the 2014 World Cup. He spent eight years in north London, playing over 250 games for Arsenal and winning three FA Cups. He wasn’t without controversy, however, and after falling out of favour with the team, he was dropped from the Premier League squad and subsequently dismissed. He spent the final few years of his career in Turkey, playing for Fenerbahce and Başakşehir before retiring.

Ozil’s New Career
He has moved into politics in Turkey.

After concluding his playing career in Turkey, Ozil stayed there and is currently engaged in politics. As the son of Turkish immigrants, he has ties to the country, and according to the Mirror, he intends to become a politician there. The former midfielder is currently working for Turkey’s AK Party, following in the footsteps of his close buddy Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Erdogan is the current president of Turkey, and he has been representing the AK Party in that capacity since 2014. He served as best man at Ozil’s wedding in 2019, and the two are extremely close, which has led to criticism of the 36-year-old. The AK Party has ruled Turkey since 2002, and in a recent election, Erdogan retained his position as president, while Ozil was elected as one of 39 new board members. It isn’t simply his career that has changed dramatically.

Ozil’s new physique
The former professional has bulked up.

Ozil maintained a thin body throughout his career, but since retiring, he has spent a lot of time in the gym. As a result, he’s grown into a bulky figure that is unrecognisable. He has gained a lot of muscle and is a far cry from the diminutive star who used to terrorise teams on the football pitch.

He wasn’t the strongest footballer and was muscled off the ball on several occasions, but it’s difficult to envision it happening now. Ozil has published photographs of his gym routine on social media, and his transformation has been amazing.
