Fans and clubs are in a constant state of debate as a result of the dramatic VAR play and controversial decisions made during the 2023–24 Premier League season.
A significant amount of this season’s VAR rulings have been compiled by ESPN, and the data shows that clubs have received different results from these referee calls.

Let’s examine the effects of VAR rulings on 15 of the 20 Premier League teams this year.
Arsenal
Six overturns—the equal most in the league—have resulted from Arsenal’s VAR calls; two of these have been converted into goals for them, and one has been disallowed.
Additionally, they have allowed their opponents to score one goal and given up one through VAR calls.
Arsenal has also been given two penalties and had one penalty call against them due to VAR rulings.
Aston Villa
Two VAR overturns have affected Aston Villa; one resulted in a goal being disallowed, and the other one set up a goal for the Villans, so their overall effect is zero goals scored.
The on-field referee awarded Unai Emery’s team a penalty, penalizing Chris Richards for a foul on Ollie Watkins in the final seconds of the match, but they have also had a VAR decision overturned.
Brentford
Two VAR overturns that favored Brentford have resulted in a goal being scored from the penalty spot.
In the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur, Heung-min Son was given a penalty kick for a foul on Mathias Jensen, giving the Bees the advantage.
In their 1-0 loss to Newcastle United, they also had a penalty call reversed after Bryan Mbeumo was initially found to have handled the ball in the 18-yard zone.
Albion, Brighton & Hove
Two VAR overturns have been made involving Brighton & Hove Albion; one involved their goal being disallowed and the other involved their opponent’s goal.
Due to these VAR rulings, there is an equal distribution of net goals scored and a net subjective score of zero for each.
Burnley
recently elevated This season, VAR has had a significant impact on Burnley, as they have experienced four overturns, one goal that was disallowed, and one goal that was disallowed for their opponents.
They have a net goal score of zero and a net subjective score of -2 due to one subjective decision going their way and three against them, including two red cards to Anass Zaroury and Lyle Foster.
Chelsea
Chelsea has also been significantly impacted by VAR rulings; they have had five overturns, one of which resulted in a goal for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.
The Blues’ net goal score is +1 as a result of both their opponents’ and their own goals being disallowed. They have received one red card and one penalty.
A goal by Moises Caicedo was disallowed for offside in the 4-1 victory over Tottenham, which was also overturned for Pochettino’s team.
Crystal Palace
Two VAR overturns have been witnessed by Crystal Palace; both forced the Eagles to concede after one arbitrary ruling went against them.
Additionally, they witnessed an overturn that was disregarded by the on-field referee, which led to a -1 net goal score as well as a -1 net subjective score.
Everton
Three VAR overturns have been made against Everton; two of these have resulted in goals for the opposition being disallowed.
With a net goal score of +1, their net subjective score of -1 suggests that they have primarily benefited from VAR decisions.
Fulham
The statistics show that Fulham has only been slightly impacted by VAR drama, with one overturn going their way.
Scott McTominay’s goal against Harry Maguire in the eighth minute was disallowed due to offside in their 1-0 loss to Manchester United.
Liverpool
Liverpool has experienced the second-highest number of overturns (five) this season, which is well-documented given their rift with VAR.
They now have a goal as a result of the decisions, and two of their strikes were rejected. Additionally, VAR has once stopped an opponent’s goal.
They were, however, the subject of a subjective VAR ruling that neutralized their impact and gave them a score of zero for net goals. Liverpool has received one red card and one penalty.
Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham Hotspur was famously disallowed for offside, resulting in a loss for Jurgen Klopp’s team. This decision went against Liverpool.
City of Manchester
Two VAR overturns have gone in Manchester City’s favor; one resulted in a goal, and the other in their opponents receiving a red card.
Additionally, a penalty was given to them, which resulted in a net goal score of +1 and a net subjective score of +2.
United Manchester
Man United has experienced the highest number of overturns, with the majority of the calls going against them—among them, a penalty call during the match against Man City.
Erik ten Hag’s team has had four goals disallowed as a result of VAR overturns; three of the subjective decisions have gone against them.
Their season has been severely impacted by this, as evidenced by their net goal score of -5 and net subjective score of -2.
United of Newcastle
Newcastle has experienced two VAR overturns, one of which resulted in a goal for them and a +1 net goal score.
They have, however, been the subject of a subjective VAR decision that has negatively impacted their net subjective score to -1.
Forest of Nottingham
This season, Nottingham Forest has had three overturns and two subjective rulings go in their favor, suggesting that they are in the clear according to VAR.
Although they haven’t directly benefited from those decisions in terms of goals, they have witnessed two goals disallowed and a red card for their opponents.
The result of these favorable VAR rulings is a net goal score of +2 and a net subjective score of +2.
Sheffield Eagles
Sheffield United’s net goal score is -1 as a result of just one VAR overturn that resulted in a goal against them.
In the eighty-fourth minute of the Blades’ 5-0 loss to Arsenal, Oliver Norwood was given a yellow card for fouling Fabio Vieira in the eighteen-yard area.
Tottenham (HTC)
Four VAR overturns against Tottenham have resulted in two goals against them, one of which was a penalty kick.
When Curtis Jones was given his marching orders for major foul play against Yves Bissouma in the contentious match, they were fortunate to have the red card decision go their way.
Their net subjective score has been negatively impacted to -1 due to one subjective VAR decision going their way and two against them.
They have also given up two penalties, which has resulted in a -2 net goal score.
In the 4-1 loss to Chelsea, Moises Caicedo’s goal was disallowed by VAR; however, upon further review, a penalty was given against Spurs.
