Exclusive: Sky analyst responds to the news of Frank Lampard and Southampton FC: “He’d be daft.”
Frank Lampard, the manager of Coventry City, has lately been connected to the Southampton position that is open.
Before falling just minutes short of a chance to advance to the play-off final, Lampard transformed Coventry from a team languishing near the bottom of the table into the top six when he took over at the CBS Arena in November 2024.
With their goal-scoring antics, the former Chelsea midfielder’s club hasn’t slowed down this season and has even outperformed the previous one, blowing teams away.
With 36 goals in 13 games, Coventry has by far the most goals in the division. Hull City’s 22 is the second-highest number, demonstrating how potent City has been in front of goal.
Teams throughout, particularly those seeking to fill a position, have taken notice of this outstanding management.
Lee Hendrie advised Frank Lampard to avoid the Southampton position.

Southampton recently decided to fire Will Still from his management position following a poor start to the 2025–26 season.
After 13 games, the Saints are only three points above Sheffield United in the relegation zone and now sit in 21st place in the second-tier rankings.
Despite Coventry’s impressive play this season, journalist Graeme Bailey claims that Lampard is at the top of the South Coast team’s list of possible replacements for Still.
Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie, a Sky Sports analyst, told Football League World exclusively that he thinks the Chelsea legend should focus on his work at the CBS Arena rather than transfer to Southampton.
Hendrie said, “I think he’d be daft to step down to Southampton.” It can’t get any worse in Southampton.
For them, Form has been incredibly inadequate. You can see that Frank has a great feeling from his work this season.
“The players like him, and the fans adore him.” After 13 games, he has enjoyed the more reliable run thus far.
“The distance to Southampton is enormous. Frank understands what circumstance he’s in and what players he’s got, and he hasn’t got to go and have the burden of trying to get Southampton promoted when he’s in a comfortable seat with Coventry City.”
It would take courage for Frank Lampard to move from Coventry City to Southampton.
Southampton has benefited from the resources and infrastructure that come with being a Premier League team for the majority of the last ten years.
With the goal of returning the Saints to the promised land in the upcoming years, this naturally makes them a desirable option for many managers.
But Lampard’s career as Coventry’s manager has been on a steep ascent, and it would seem unwise to spoil it by moving to the South Coast.
So far this season, the Sky Blues have appeared to be the greatest team in the Championship, and they have a genuine chance to contend for automatic promotion. On the other hand, Southampton’s best chance right now is to qualify for the playoffs if their performance significantly improves.
Thus, it would take a great deal of courage for the Chelsea icon to leave the CBS Arena and take over the Saints, and it might be a little confused.
