Despite having a personal rule that forbids him from doing so, Pep Guardiola may choose to hire players from previous clubs this summer. The former head coach of Bayern Munich and Barcelona has only broken the rule twice in the past, but the most recent transfer opportunity might be too good to refuse.

When Guardiola enticed Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona to Bayern in 2013, he was the first to use the resources of a former team. He repeated the feat with Claudio Bravo, whom he brought to the Etihad Stadium from Barcelona following the contentious dismissal of goalkeeper Joe Hart, three years later.

Marti Perarnau, Guardiola’s biographer, claims that the manager makes an effort to limit these kinds of actions. But according to new reports, he might be about to disobey his rule for the second time since joining City eight years ago.

City is keeping a close eye on Joshua Kimmich, a midfielder for Bayern, according to HITC. After acquiring Kimmich from RB Leipzig in 2015, Guardiola immediately inserted him into the Bavarian first team.

After almost 400 games, it’s evident that Guardiola saw the future star coming, and the 29-year-old may play with him again this summer. As Kimmich’s contract nears its end, Bayern must sell him in the upcoming months or run the risk of losing him for nothing the following season.

Over the weekend, Kimmich attempted to avoid providing a definitive response regarding his future while serving with Germany abroad. “It doesn’t just depend on me, but also on the club [Bayern],” he stated.

Since I still have a year left on my contract, I don’t see any uncertainty in my situation. All attention is on this European Championship. I’m focusing on that, and after that, there will undoubtedly be a discussion. After that, my first point of contact will be FC Bayern.”

Kimmich can play in midfield, where Guardiola might be shorthanded come season unless fresh talent is brought to the Etihad, or at right-back, where City already have Kyle Walker as a guaranteed starter.
